Coral Harbour Base, 21 August ‘16 (RBDF)… Sub-Lieutenant Dominic Rigby paid a courtesy call on Captain Tellis Bethel, the Commander Defence Force (Acting) to apprise him of his progress at the State University New York where Sub Lt. Rigby is a third-year student at the institution and is pursuing a Bachelor of Art degree in mechanical engineering.

Captain Bethel stated that Rigby's success story is an inspiring one for young Bahamians and encouraged him to continue to excel in his academic studies and his career to become one of The Bahamas' most accomplished engineers.

As a young student at the A.F. Adderley Junior High school, Sub Lieutenant Dominique Rigby always wanted to join the Royal Bahamas Defence Force. He took his first step towards this goal by becoming a part of the RBDF Rangers programme at the school in 2000. Although the programme was not available at private schools at that time, Rigby remained a part of the programme but while attending Kingsway Academy in 2002, and eventually rose to the position of Master-At-Arms.

“The Rangers programme enhanced my leadership ability to take charge. The power of command and physical fitness training I received were a tremendous boost for my career in the Force,” says Rigby. “Learning how to get along with other persons I did not know also helped to develop my social skills.”

Sub Lieutenant Rigby says that former Defence Force Officer Shawn Thurston encouraged him to join the Force and to transition from the enlisted corps to the officer’s Corps of the Defence Force. It was in October 2007 that Rigby enlisted as a Marine, and in 2008, Rigby was successful in being selected to attend the Royal Naval Young Officers Course at Britannia Royal Naval College, England. This made him the first RBDF Rangers Cadet to join the Defence Force and to later become a member of the Defence Force's Officer Corps.

Since graduating from the Britannia Royal Naval College, Rigby has served in the Squadron Department where he was appointed the Commanding Officer of HMBS P-49, the Navigating Officer on HMBS Yellow Elder and the Deck Officer aboard HMBS Nassau. In January 2013, Rigby was awarded study-leave by the Defence Force to pursue his Bachelors of Art degree in Mechanical Engineering at the State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College in The Bronx, New York. He is a third year/junior student at the University and will graduate in May 2017.

Upon graduating, Sub Lieutenant Rigby will join the Engineering Department where his knowledge and expertise will be used to assist with the efficient and effective management of that Department.
