The University of The Bahamas Commencement Ceremony honours and celebrates the hard work, dedication and perseverance of our students who are proudly crossing the threshold to become graduates of our beloved institution. As a time-honoured tradition, Commencement has special significance for all academic communities and ours is no different. This week and next, as our students in New Providence and Grand Bahama participate in various commencement activities, the UB community will support them, knowing the sacrifices that they and their families have made for their accomplishments.

We wish to advise that there are guidelines governing the adorning of academic regalia for Commencement in order to preserve the dignity and honour of the ceremony. They are enshrined in the Policy on Academic Regalia recently passed by the Transition Academic Senate which comprises faculty, staff and student representation. This policy was informed by initial discussion held between the Administrative Council and the Student Government Association.  The policy is like many others in higher education; not as liberal as some, not as conservative as others.  UB makes no apologies for its position, and stands by it.  Graduates participating in Commencement are permitted to wear one academic stole each representing a Greek organization, honours society, or a registered club, along with the distinction honour cord as applicable. For this year only, given the miscommunication, those students who adorn decorated mortarboards, will not be prevented from participating in the Spring 2018 Commencement ceremony. Thereafter, the Policy on Academic Regalia will be upheld.

We regret any miscommunication and look forward to proudly witnessing our students join the ranks of our more than 18,000 alumni.
