On Zero Discrimination Day, the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) of the OAS is pleased to launch a new report entitled "Human rights of women living with HIV in the Americas" developed by the CIM and UNAIDS, with the collaboration of the International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS.

TheReport seeks to identify advances in and challenges to the protection and exercise of the human rights of all ofthe diverse women living with HIV, as well as to promote the development of regional and national strategies for the promotion, protection and realization of these rights.

In her message, CIM Executive Secretary, Carmen Moreno, contended that"We have halted and reversed the spread of HIV and have achieved a significant reduction of the epidemic in Latin America, the number of new HIV infections in 2014 was 17% lower than in 2000. Despite of this progress, significant barriers to the full exercise of the rights of women living with HIV still remain in the Americas. Although most countries in the region have laws, strategic plans and programs on HIV, they differ significantly in their approach and scope, particularly from a gender perspective. "

Arely Cano, Regional Secretary of the International Community of Women Living with HIV AIDS (ICW Latina) noted that "for women living with HIV, the Report is very important for the region because it will allow women living with HIV to establish a strategy of political advocacyā€¯.

TheReport was developednot only for women living with HIV, but also to serve as an instrument of guidance, advocacy and training for governments, civil society and other actors seeking to advance public policies and programs that meet the needs of women living with HIV and ensure the full exercise of their human rights.
