Following the results of the plebescite on Sunday, the Mission to Support the Peace Process in Colombia of the Organization of American States (MAPP/OAS) welcomes the willingness of the Colombian government, the FARC-EP, and the campaigners for the “No” vote to open a frank dialogue to continue moving forward in peacebuilding efforts.

In particular, the MAPP/OAS highlights the series of meetings President Juan Manuel Santos has begun with several sectors in the country, including meetings held with former Presidents Andres Pastrana and Alvaro Uribe, which give continuity to this effort.

These spaces must contribute to the formulation of proposals to strengthen the final agreement for the termination of the conflict and to promote their implementation.

The peace process requires the widespread and diverse participation by all the sectors of society, including in particular the 60 percent that did not vote in the plebiscite.

Therefore, the Mission urges all Colombians to continue working together to achieve the transformations that will enable the country to overcome conflict and inequality, and reach the peace the entire country desires.

Moreover, the Mission highlights the decision of the national government and the FARC-EP to maintain the cease fire, as a clear show of their commitment to the dialogue and to overcoming the use of force.

The MAPP/OAS has accompanied peacebuilding efforts in Colombia since 2004 and will continue to do so with the same commitment to its mandate, recently extended until 2018.
