The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) today approved a resolution to hold the next General Assembly of the Organization in Medellin, Colombia, on June 26, 27 and 28, 2019.

In his presentation to the Council, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia, Carlos Holmes Trujillo, highlighted the commitment of his country to the renewal of Inter-American multilateralism and explained that Colombia's offer is framed in "an act of faith in the Inter-American system, and in the OAS, an act of faith that arises from the deepest conviction that there are responses to the great challenges we face in the Americas that only the Inter-American system, with its own values and qualities, and despite its limitations, can offer. "

For his part, the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, emphasized that Colombia "is a close partner, a friend and collaborator in our Organization in all of the issues on our agenda; proof of this is the decision of the government to host the next OAS General Assembly." The Secretary General also highlighted President Duque's generous approach to the migration crisis affecting the region. "Colombia is an admirable example, it represents the best of our values, our unceasing solidarity where there is no place for racism and xenophobia, only for arms open to our neighbors, to those in need," said Almagro.

Colombia hosted the Inter-American Conference where the OAS Foundational Charter was signed on April 30, 1948, and has hosted the General Assembly twice: in 1985 and 2008.
