OAS Approves Creation of a Working Group to Search for peaceful solutions to the situation in Nicaragua

The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) approved the creation of a Working Group on Nicaragua "whose mandate will be to contribute to the search for peaceful and sustainable solutions to the evolving situation in Nicaragua, including through consultations with the Government of Nicaragua."

The Working Group for Nicaragua, created through a resolution, ”will be composed of a representative of each regional group and other Member States” who will be “designated by the Chair of the Permanent Council in consultation with the coordinators of regional groups, no later than August 10" and "will present a monthly report to the Permanent Council on its actions and progress."

The document, presented by the delegations of Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, the United States, Mexico, Paraguay and Peru, also establishes that the Working Group for Nicaragua "will contribute to the process of national dialogue in Nicaragua, including support, accompaniment and verification measures in coordination with ongoing efforts of the Organization, SICA and other regional and international actors."

The resolution was approved with 20 votes in favor (Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, The Bahamas, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, the United States, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, Santa Lucía, and Uruguay), 4 votes against (Bolivia, Nicaragua, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Venezuela), 8 abstentions (Barbados, Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago), and two absent countries (Dominica and Grenada).
