The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today condemned "the cowardly shooting of a soldier dutifully guarding Canada’s war memorial and the subsequent armed attack on Canada’s Parliament, which represent an affront to the very symbols of Canadian democracy,” and expressed his support and the Organization's for the Government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

The Secretary General offered his condolences to the family of Corporal Nathan Cirillo, who was killed in the attack at the Cenotaph, and said he stood in solidarity with all Canadians during this difficult time. He also noted the courage of members of the security services who risked their lives and were able to stop one armed intruder inside the parliament building before he was able to target additional victims, including Members of Parliament who were present at the time of the attack.

The OAS leader praised Canada as a country with deep democratic traditions, strong rule of law and firm resolve. “I know that Canadians will not be intimidated by this heinous act, whatever its origins or motivation,” he said. "Once again, terrorism has struck in the heart of our continent, and we must join forces to combat it," he added.
