The Organization of American States (OAS) congratulates Mme. Michaƫlle Jean on her recent election as Secretary General of the International Organization of La Francophonie (IOF). The OAS looks forward to working closely with La Francophonie under the leadership of Secretary General Jean to strengthen cooperation between both organizations.

Prior to her election, Secretary General Jean worked closely with the OAS on issues affecting youth at risk, the global Haitian Diaspora, and other hemispheric issues of critical importance. Her steadfast leadership ability and commitment to democracy and development is noteworthy, and the OAS looks forward to strengthening this partnership as Mme Jean assumes her postion as Secretary General of the IOF.

The OAS also extends its thanks and appreciation to the former Secretary General Abdou Diouf for his tireless efforts as head of La Francophonie. Under his leadership, the OAS and IOF signed a Cooperation Agreement strengthening democracy, electoral observation and the exchange of best practices.
