The Electoral Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the municipal elections of February 2 in Costa Rica began its work in the country today.

The Mission is composed of 11 international experts and is headed by former National Registrar of Colombia Juan Carlos Galindo. During its visit, the Mission will make a substantive analysis in matters of electoral organization and technology, women's political participation, political party financing, and electoral justice.

On Wednesday, January 29, the Chief of Mission and the President of the Electoral Tribunal (TSE), Luis Antonio Sobrado González, will sign the agreement on the procedures for the observation. During their stay in the country, the experts will meet with electoral and government authorities, political leaders, candidates, representatives of civil society, among others, to learn about the different aspects of the electoral process.

This will be the thirteenth Mission the OAS will send to Costa Rica, the first country to receive an Electoral Mission of the Organization in 1962. More recently, the OAS observed in 2018 the general election and the second presidential round and, in 2014, the last municipal elections.
