OAS, PAHO and International Institutions Join Forces to Tackle the Leading Causes of Death in the Americas

The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) will launch next Wednesday, June 17 in Washington, DC, the Inter-American Task Force on Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs), a multisectoral effort to combat the causes of 80% of deaths in the countries of the Americas.

The event will be opened by the OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro, with presentations by the Director of PAHO, Dr. Carissa Etienne, the President of the Inter-American Development Bank, Luis Alberto Moreno, and other representatives of governments and institutions involved.

The event’s objective is to present the cooperation between different international agencies and organizations to support the member states in the prevention and control of NCDs and to promote collaboration between different sectors of government in the Americas to be able to provide a comprehensive response to NCDs at the national, subregional and regional levels.

The Task Force will include PAHO, the OAS - including entities such as the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) and the Inter-American Children's Institute (IIN) - the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the World Bank.

NCDs are principally cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), cancers, diabetes, and chronic respiratory diseases, together with four shared behavioral risk factors: tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, and the harmful use of alcohol.
