The
Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) today
expressed its solidarity with the peoples and governments of Ecuador and Uruguay after the natural disasters suffered by both countries in recent days.
The
representatives of the Member States approved the statements of
solidarity by acclamation and observed a minute of silence for the
victims. The Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, proposed
activating the Inter-American Emergency Aid Committee and urged talks
with Ambassador Carlos Daneri, head of the White Helmets of Argentina,
and with other Member States who wish to collaborate with this program.
In
recent days, an earthquake left more than 250 dead and thousands
injured in Ecuador, and in Uruguay a tornado killed several people and
caused a flood wave that caused incalculable damage.
