The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) today presented an innovative competitive tool for inclusive economic growth in the framework of a meeting of the Inter-American Council for Integral Development (CIDI) of the OAS in which a debate was held on an approach that allows prioritizing competitiveness policies that contribute to economic growth with evidence-based instruments and methodologies.

The tool presented is a portal to support member states in their efforts to design and prioritize competitiveness policies through simulation models and methodologies with data-driven instruments. The tool will allow for the development of an Atlas of Competitiveness of the Americas including indicators on the strength of the institutions, capacities and beliefs of each country and how they relate to export baskets, as well as possible paths of diversification of the structure.

Within the framework of the meeting, the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, urged member states to develop methods to diagnose and design policies that foster inclusive economic growth, with the objective of identifying, prioritizing and enhancing the key factors for competitiveness in each country. "The tool we present today seeks to provide countries with the opportunity to focus their competitiveness policies based on data-driven instruments and methodologies to facilitate evidence-based decision-making," he said.

The Executive Secretary for Integral Development of the OAS, Kim Osborne, detailed the initiatives that the OAS has implemented in the area of competitiveness, as well as the achievements made during 2019. "These activities emphasize the importance of policies and strategies that foster entrepreneurial and innovative behavior and that enable the search for and penetration of new markets. They also reflect the importance of aligning private incentives with public objectives."

The meeting featured presentations by experts on the subject of competitiveness, innovation, knowledge transfer, technology and research from the OAS, the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Centro de Investigaciones Biológica del Noroeste, S.C. of Mexico.

The OAS is the technical secretariat of the Inter-American Competitiveness Network (RIAC), a regional platform that brings together high-level authorities in the area of competitiveness, innovation and economic development in the region. It annually convenes the Competitiveness Forum of the Americas, the Americas Competitiveness Exchange and coordinates the  Working Group of Experts on Subnational Competitiveness (GTECS).
