Jul 11, 2014 - 11:08:11 AM

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, offered his condolences today, on his behalf and that of the institution he leads, to Belize on the passing of Ambassador Alfredo Martínez, who represented Belize in the conversations that the OAS facilitated with Guatemala over the territorial differendum between the two countries.

In a letter to the Prime Minister of Belize, Dean Barrow, Secretary General Insulza communicated to the people and government of the country his “heartfelt condolences on the untimely passing of this great son of Belize." “Alfredo was no ordinary public servant,” said the OAS leader, who recalled the numerous public offices held by Martínez in the course of his long career, among them those of Senator, Minister of Trade and Ambassador to Guatemala.

"For us at the OAS, it was Ambassador Martinez’s contribution as your country´s facilitator in the Belize-Guatemala territorial differendum which brought him into regular contact with me and other colleagues at the Secretariat and for which we were most grateful," said the Secretary General, who highlighted that, in these efforts, the diplomat from Belize distinguished himself as “a true national who was deeply committed to a peaceful resolution of the territorial differendum between Belize and Guatemala.”

The OAS leader highlighted in his condolence letter to Prime Minister Barrow on the passing of Ambassador Martínez his hope that, “in memory of his commitment to peace and the security of friendly neighbors and the integration of the region, there would soon be a final resolution of the territorial differendum between Belize and Guatemala.”
