OAS to Observe February 2 Municipal Elections in Costa Rica

The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Government of Costa Rica today signed an agreement to send an Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) to the municipal elections of February 2, 2020, at a ceremony at the headquarters of the agency hemispheric in Washington, DC.

The Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, recalled that Costa Rica was the first country to which the Organization sent an EOM, in 1962. “It is an honor to send a team back to a country with such a long democratic trajectory, that in these municipal elections will elect a total of 6,138 positions. Among them 82 mayors and deputy mayors, 8 superintendents and deputy superintendents, 1,061 councilors, 972 trustees, 3,824 members and alternates of the district councils, and 64 members and alternates of the municipal councils,” said Secretary General Almagro.

For her part, the Permanent Representative of Costa Rica, Montserrat Solano, highlighted the historical relationship of the OAS with her country and highlighted the importance of local elections. "Municipal elections are usually considered to be lower level, but in the end they are the governments that are closest to the people," said Ambassador Solano.

The Chief of the Mission will be the former National Registrar of Colombia Juan Carlos Galindo.
