We have supported the peace process promoted by President Juan Manuel Santos from the beginning and we are deeply committed to the desire of the Colombian people to live in peace.

The recent majority decision by the voters not to support the Peace Agreements of Havana between the government and the FARC, in a plebiscite which included the electoral observation of the OAS, opens the doors to a peace process anchored in a great national dialogue.

The result of the referendum, being the voice of the people, must be respected by the participants in the ongoing dialogue.

This wise road of conciliation backed by the government, in which the opposition is taking part, and that is backed by the explicit goodwill of the FARC, is essential in any democracy to resolve internal differences.

We welcome the undeniable will of all those involved to find a viable way out of this post-plebiscite situation.

Similarly, we urge everyone involved to conclude an inclusive and definitive agreement as soon as possible to put an end to the armed conflict.

The recent awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to President Santos should be the greatest incentive to act in this way. The same can be said of the thousands of students who have peacefully protested, calling for a prompt conclusion to the process.

Since 2004, the OAS, through the Mission to Support the Peace Process (MAPP/OAS), has accompanied peace efforts on the grounded we will continue to do so in the post conflict stage. We recently signed the extension and enlargement of the mandate of the MAPP/OAS to focus on those dynamics that pose risks, threats, and challenges to peace.

Peace in Colombia is a victory for the entire hemisphere.
