New edition of IDEAS contest seeks proposals to promote innovative energy solutions in Latin America and the Caribbean
Proposals must be submitted by August 15, 2013 via the www.iadb.org/ideas website
The 2013 IDEAS Energy Innovation Contest has launched a new call for proposals for improving energy efficiency and expanding access to renewable energy in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Sponsored by GDF SUEZ, the Nordic Development Fund (NDF), the government of South Korea and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the contest is seeking proposals that promote innovative solutions to energy problems, benefit local communities or regions, create jobs and contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
Award winners will receive up to $100,000, as well as technical and business development support to implement and scale up their ideas, moving from a pure concept level to a pilot-tested stage supported by a business plan ready for submission to other financial entities.
“This is a unique opportunity for individuals and institutions to receive immediate support from international institutions to innovative ideas in the field of energy,” said Arnaldo Vieira de Carvalho, lead energy specialist at the IDB’s Energy Division.
Individuals, enterprises and organizations based in countries that are borrowing members of the IDB are invited to submit proposals, which must focus on the adoption, innovation, assimilation, development and transfer of technologies in renewable energy, energy efficiency, climate change mitigation and fossil fuel substitution. Proposals must be submitted by August 15, 2013, Eastern Time, via the
www.iadb.org/ideas website. Winners will be announced in November, 2013.

Nordic Development Fund (NDF) is the joint development finance institution of the five Nordic countries—Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden—funded by the countries’ development assistance budgets. NDF provides grant financing for interventions in low-income countries to address the causes and consequences of climate change. Financing is provided mainly in cooperation with other multilateral development institutions. NDF’s operations mirror the Nordic countries’ priorities in the area of climate change and development.
Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) is the leading source of development financing for Latin America and the Caribbean, with a strong commitment to achieve measurable results, increased integrity, transparency and accountability. Through its Sustainable Energy and Climate Change Initiative (SECCI), the IDB supports renewable energy and energy efficiency, biofuel development, carbon finance, and adaptation to climate change.
South Korean Government actively supports Latin America and the Caribbean’s efforts toward improving energy access, efficiency, and producing renewable energy. To that end, Korea established the “Knowledge Partnership Korea Fund for Technology and Innovation” (KPKF) within the IDB.
