The Bahamas - The Downtown Nassau Partnership invites visual artists to submit existing works for inclusion in an exhibition in vacant storefronts on Bay Street, Nassau. The project is intended to depict the spectacle of daily urban life and encourage passersby to imagine the possibilities for the City of Nassau.

Art! East of East Street will take place on Bay Street between East Street and Victoria Avenue from July 31 to August 31, 2009. Artwork will be exhibited in secured storefronts with the permission of the property owner. In addition, the project will include certain guerilla art installations that are intended to engage with and re-appropriate the urban space east of East Street. The complete exhibition space is that area of Bay Street where the attention of passersby can be called to aspects of their everyday urban environment they might overlook or simply ignore.

All artwork submitted will be juried by a small project team. Works will be selected based on appropriateness of subject matter and specific space and lighting requirements. Given the physical constraints of the spaces we do not recommend submission of water color paintings. Large scale works are welcomed.

About the Downtown Nassau Partnership

The Downtown Nassau Partnership (DNP) was created to help oversee the restructuring of urban space on New Providence. This will involve a social and economic transformation of the city of Nassau from Wulff Road to Bay Street, and from Arawak Cay to Potters Cay. It will require a focus on culture and heritage, a physical redevelopment, and a systematic effort to remake the city s image.

The DNP is an interim organization formed in 2008 as a joint venture of the private and public sectors to achieve a progressive redevelopment of the city of Nassau. One of its main tasks will be to develop a framework for government to legislate a self-financing Business Improvement District that will manage and promote the city of Nassau going forward.
