It’s that time of the year again when love is in the air, and it is also during this time when individuals tend to take a lot for granted and let their guard down.

If you follow the following few simple suggestions, it will help you stay safe while you’re having a good time.

  • Before agreeing to a date, make sure you know as much about the other person as possible
  • Make sure you feel comfortable with whoever you are dating, at all times
  • If someone is abusive or rude, block them immediately
  • Keep your first date to a specified time limit so you always have an "exit" point
  • Always have back up travel arrangements to/from a first date
  • Don’t go off with a person you’ve only just met or reveal your address. Stay in the public place. If they interest you, get a phone number.
  • Always tell a relative or a good friend where you are going and who you're meeting
  • Always carry a cell phone on a date
  • Consider socializing with others. There is safety in numbers
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash –use an ATM/Debit card when possible.
  • Stay away from clubs and bars where senseless arguments are likely to occur
  • Don’t leave drinks unattended and don’t accept a drink from a stranger. Don’t take your eyes off your drink
  • Avoid ‘shots’ or drinking games. You are likely to make silly or even dangerous decisions when you have had too much to drink
  • Don’t get into a verbal argument if someone aggressively confronts you. Walk away.
  • Don’t get into a car with a driver who has been drinking

Police are appealing to anyone who may have any information regarding any crime, no matter how small or insignificant (the tip) may seem, to anonymously call Police at 919 or CRIME STOPPERS at 328-TIPS (8477) OR 1-242-300-8477 (FAMILY ISLANDS)
