Freeport, The Bahamas - In recognition of social workers and the services provided by them to the community in The Bahamas, the Grand Bahama Association of Social Workers presented an introductory session for trainers on March 28th.  Jonathan Holmsten, MS, LPC, NCC, who is a licensed professional counselor with Ross University Bahamas, was a featured speaker.

The session was entitled “ Who’s in Control, You or Your Anger?” Most of those that turned out were social workers, but others from careers that may involved handling persons in anger also attended.

"Anger is a natural and even necessary emotion that has advantages and disadvantages depending on how it is managed and choices made when angry. It can be an advantage in providing motivation, revealing personal values and beliefs and helping one to stand up for self, others or justice. Anger also reveals what we care about as we won’t get angry at things that we are indifferent about, " said Mr. Holmsten.

"The challenge is that most people focus on “what” made them angry rather than internally at why their buttons got pushed. We looked at this as anger is a secondary emotion as we cannot get angry unless a primary emotion (usually related to hurt, fear, confusion, embarrassment etc.) is triggered first, but again many people would rather focus on what (externally) caused the anger rather than what happened to them internally."

During the session he reviewed 'adolescent anger issues' as well as 'anger pathway' that helps one to understand their triggers, signs or symptoms of anger and then develop a plan or strategy for managing these so that anger doesn’t build up.

"Anger management requires Self Awareness, Self Regulation and Self Control," said Holmsten.
