Pelican Bay at Lucaya Hosts Employees and Family to 3rd Annual Fun Day

Grand Bahama Island, The Bahamas -- Pelican Bay at Lucaya hosted some 45 employees and their families at its Third Annual Family Fun Day Picnic at Banana Bay Saturday past. Employees and their children were feted to a full afternoon of food, drink and music.

“The Pelican Bay Family Fun Day Picnic is designed as a team building event to create deeper relationships between employees and also bring out children to enjoy an afternoon of fun,” said Mrs. Judy Duncombe, Director Human Resources. The event was spearheaded by Mrs. Della Bridgewater, front office manager, Giovanni Sands, Maintenance Manager and Mrs. Duncombe.

A number of employees were presented with various awards. Amongst those persons being recognized for outstanding performance were: Mrs. Evelyn Sands who had no sick days off since the resort’s new ownership, Sundt AB, became effective in May 2005...

The fund raising project is all part of "Police Appreciation Week" which will culminate on July 5th at the Rotary Club Of Grand Bahama Sunrise “Protect The Protectors Rib Fest” at Seahorse Plaza from 12 – 6pm with entertainment by the Royal Bahamas Police Band and demonstrations by Royal Bahamas Police and Fire Departments.

Grand Bahama alligator, Ali Baba goes home

He didn’t belong here in the first place. Nevertheless, eleven years ago, Ali Baba and fourteen other baby male alligators were flown in to Freeport by Parrot Jungle, then lessee of the Garden of the Groves. In a misguided and ill-fated attempt to enhance the property’s attraction value by offering zoo-like exhibits of live animals, the alligators were brought in without much apparent thought for their well-being as they grew and matured. After the hurricanes of 2004 devastated the Garden along with much of Grand Bahama, and then Wilma in 2005 added the finishing touches, Parrot Jungle completely abandoned their responsibility for the surviving animals in the summer of 2006.

DC Caribbean Carnival 2008

Washington, DC - On Saturday, June 28th, along the Georgia Avenue corridor the Caribbean Carnival Parade proceeded to an international marketplace called "De Savannah," featuring food, crafts and entertainment. Sunday June 29, 2008, the DC Caribbean Carnival continued with live performances from local and international artists, food, craft and entertainment.

The Bahamas Junkanoo Association/BJAM participated under the theme, "Wild Wonders" and took first place in "Best Live Band".

Premier League Soccer Camp Stars of 2008

Grand Bahama Island - Almost 200 children enjoyed five days of soccer fun at the Freeport Football Rugby Club from June 23rd to 27th for the 5th Annual English Premier League Soccer Camp. It was the best attendance to date, and despite the 90 degree heat with no rain all week, the kids kept their level of enthusiam up throughout the week.

Visiting UK coaches, Philip French, Luther Blissett and Jamie Godbold were amazed at the attitudes of the local children and thoroughly enjoyed the camp themselves.

Government to Enhance Standard of Preschool Education

NASSAU , Bahamas -- The Ministry of Education officially launched the Grandfather Programme of Caregivers in Day-Care and Preschool Centres, a move to raise the standards of early childhood care in the country.

On behalf of the Minister the Hon. Carl Bethel, Permanent Secretary Elma Garraway announced details of the programme during a ceremony Monday, June 30, at the Anglican Church of the Epiphany on Prince Charles Drive.

Effective immediately, the programme calls for candidates to undergo a 40 credit-hour course, which ends in March 2009. Candidates must be 40 years and over and have worked with children for 10 years or more. The Ministry has accepted 105 candidates to be trained over the period of 40 contact days...

Defence vessel off south coast of Grand Bahama Island

Grand Bahama Island - This defence vessel was spotted off the south-west coast of Grand Bahama and the photo was taken from Taino Beach area. The vessel was visible during the Grand Bahama Regatta and many people wondering just what it was.

A Grand Bahama resident sent The Bahamas Weekly this photo and informed us that it is a Royal Bahamian Defence Force ship. He told us that according to Wikipedia the RBDF only has two operational ships, and the P-61 is the HMBS Nassau. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMBS_Nassau , so unless Wikipedia is out of date, that is what it is...

Christiansen appointed new chairman of Port Group

Erik Christiansen, Danish developer and former owner of New Hope Holding Company Limited, has been unanimously appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors and Port Group Limited (PGL) the Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) announced in a press release yesterday.

Christiansen was selected to the board earlier to represent the St. Georges family along with Felix Stubbs, general manager of IBM Bahamas, who represents the Hayward interest.

Christiansen started his own structural engineering firm in 1960 and expanded his firm to Holland, Iran, Oman and the Arabian Peninsula. By 1970 Chirstiansen became a member of the Executive Board of Pakhoed Holding, while in this position he was responsible for their real estate division which was the largest commercial real estate firm in the Netherlands...

South Eleuthera Mission: Heritage & Cultural Fair

The South Eleuthera Mission Project comprises the restoration of the Old Clinic building in Rock Sound to serve as a library, internet café, reading room and museum and provide a cultural, training and mentorship centre for South Eleutherans particularly the youth. Initially a Methodist manse built around 1830, the building was condemned at the beginning of this millennium and following a local petition, the people of South Eleuthera were granted use of the building by the Government in 2003. The restoration of the building commenced in April 2005 and as of today over $500,000.00 has been raised for that purpose. The restoration is nearly complete, and with the roof being rebuilt over the next few months, it is planned that the building will be formally open for business early next year...

The donation will help the group cover the cost of creating first-class costumes for performances at special occasions and holidays. Formed in 2001, the West End Conquerors regularly perform at Old Bahama Bay by Ginn sur Mer events.

BIFF's 2008 Big Screen Art Scene - Photos

Nassau, Bahamas – The Big Screen Art Scene took place on June 21st to kick off the Bahamas International Film Festival's (BIFF) fifth year.

This year, BIFF donated part of the funds raised to the new D'Aguilar Art Foundation in honour of the late Vincent D'Aguilar, a much-loved supporter and collector of Bahamian art.

Some of the 2008 participants included Tyrone Ferguson, Antonius Roberts, Jackson Burnside, Stan Burnside, Margot Bethel, Nicole Collie, Claudette Dean, Holly Parotti, Bernard Petit, Livingstone Pratt, and Arjuna Watson. Sir Sean and Lady Connery and Lady Nutall donated art. There was an on-site store with additional works from participating artists, live model sketching and other entertainment.

Minister of Health Encourages Fight against Obesity

Nassau, Bahamas -- Minister of Health Dr. the Hon. Hubert Minnis has called on Bahamians to fight against the “epidemic of obesity”, which is a growing problem among the nation’s youth.

He was addressing the Links Youth Health Forum held Saturday, June 28, at the National Centre for the Performing Arts on Shirley Street, under the theme, “Creating a Healthy Culture Among Young Bahamians”.

The event, which attracted youngsters ages five to 17, was designed to promote good health among children and create an awareness of the dangers of juvenile obesity...

The bonefishing sector continues to play an important role in the sportsfishing industry and the economy of the Bahamas. Many Bahamians find excellent employment opportunities as bonefish guides throughout the Bahamas and there is the potential for more persons to be so employed. Record Amount of Blood Collected at BTC Sponsored Blood Drive

NASSAU , Bahamas -- A total of 336 units of blood were collected and shared between the Princess Margaret Hospital and Doctor’s Hospital Blood Banks during the World Blood Donor Day Blood Drive 2008 sponsored by the Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) June 14.

Ms Tinnyse Johnson of Grand Bahama replaces Anya Watkins, the 2007 Miss Bahamas World, who since winning has developed a flourishing career as a fashion model.

Tinnyse Johnson will represent The Bahamas at the Miss World 2008 pageant .

Further to my discussion last week regarding face lift surgery; facial emotion is most dramatically reflected in the eyebrow and forehead. Ideally, a woman’s eyebrows should arch on or slightly above the upper orbital rims (upper rim of the bone over the eye) and a man’s should arch along the rims. If the eyebrows are displaced downward, the face may portray certain stereotypic expressions. For example, downward displacement of the inner portion of the eyebrows often depicts an expression of ill will; downward displacement of the middle portion of the eyebrows may depict an expression of sadness; and overall downward displacement of the eyebrows suggests fatigue. Similarly, forehead wrinkles relay certain facial expressions. Deep vertical lines between the eyebrows (in the glabellar region) give the unintentional impression of anger, annoyance, or a scowl, whereas a heavily lined forehead may give a tired and worried expression.

Maritime Cadets Receive Certification
