NASSAU, Bahamas - The Bahamas joined the United States of America in celebrating its 233rd Anniversary, commemorating this year the life and legacy of President Abraham Lincoln.

A ceremony was held at Liberty Overlook, the US ambassador’s residence, Sandford Drive, July 2.

Sign erected in Williams Town heralds imminent start of work on cruise port

The Freeport News - Government officials have already erected signs notifying residents of Williams Town of their decision to place Grand Bahama's new cruise ship facility in that settlement.

The sign, which has been in place for more than a week, reads: "Take notice that pursuant to section 4 of the Acquisition of Land Act... it appears to the Minister responsible for the acquisition and disposition of lands (Hubert Ingraham) that the land described ... is likely to be needed for the public purpose of promoting the tourist traffic of The Bahamas and providing increased harbour and dock facilities and for uses related hereto..."

Nassau, Bahamas – The current economic crunch will not last forever and the Bahamas’ infrastructure “must be in good condition” when the economy rebounds, Public Works and Transport Minister Neko C. Grant said, July 2.

Minister Grant was responding to comments by Senator Allyson Maynard-Gibson during her contribution to the debate in the Senate on a Bill for an Act to Amend the Cruise Ship’s Overnighting Incentives Act on Wednesday.

She criticized the government for, among other things, its plans to continue with the Nassau Harbor dredging despite the global economic downturn...

PONY Caribbean Zone Baseball Tournament in Gurabo, Puerto Rico.

The tournament, which is hosted by PONY Baseball Inc., will cater to young men from 15-16 years old. Team Bahamas, which placed third at last year's championships, departs New Providence on Monday, July 6 at 9:00 p.m. on American Eagle, for the tournament which will run through Sunday, July 12...

Grand Bahama Island - Bahamas' Independence Day is Friday, July 10th. The Independence Committee of Grand Bahama announce the lineup of events for the island, which commence on Wednesday, July 1st with the Annual Basketball Classic at Sir Jack Hayward Gym officially opening at 7:30pm.

National Pride Day will take place on Friday, July 3rd.

A special church service is set for Sunday, July 5th and the basketball tournament continues throughout the week, culminating with all the major events beginning to take place on Thursday evening, July 9th at Independence Park.

233rd Anniversary of the US Independence celebration held in Grand Bahama

The United States Embassy celebrated the 233^rd Anniversary of the Independence of the United States of America with two celebrations; one in Freeport, Grand Bahama on Wednesday, July 1, and the other in New Providence on July 2nd. This is the first time that the Embassy hosted an official Independence celebration on Grand Bahama. This year’s celebration theme was dedicated to the 200^th anniversary of the birth of President Abraham Lincoln”.

In Grand Bahama, the 4^th of July an official reception was held in the Pavillion at Our Lucaya Beach & Golf Resort.

Wingspan Productions films "Diplomacy" in Nassau about a historic meeting in Lyford Cay

The Bahamas - Wing Span Productions, a UK film production company was in Nassau filming a documentary for BBC in Nassau during May, 2009.

The project was based on a very high profile meeting with took place in Lyford Cay in 1962 at a private residence called Bali Hai. At the historic meeting in '62 was US President, John F. Kennedy, British Prime Minister, Harold MacMillan and Canadian Prime Minister John Diefenbaker. The talks focused on the placement of nuclear missels in Cuba.

Wingspan interviewed a number of Bahamians who worked at Bali Hai at the time, persons who might have heard some snippets of the talks. It was said that Kennedy and MacMillan walked the beach of Bali Hai where they engaged in private talks about the Cuban incident...

Tourist Mango Card Launched

Nassau, The Bahamas - The Ministry of Tourism and Aviation has partnered with Transfer Solution Providers Ltd. (TSP) to launch the new Tourist Mango Card.

The Tourist Mango Cards allows for cashless financial transactions with merchants. Visitors or other individuals who purchase the cards can make payments for services or to purchase goods. The cards will be available for purchase in varying amounts, up to $100.

Vernice Walkine, Director General of Tourism, said the tourism professionals in the Bahamas are always seeking to exceed the expectations of guests. The card will allow this to be accomplished through enhanced safety and convenience, she said...

Nassau, Bahamas - The Food & Music Festival at the Mall at Marathon turned out to be a wonderful one with a fantastic turn out. Dr. Sandra Dean Patterson was invited to the event, andTaDa (Ternielle Burrows) invited her on stage to shed some light on this epidemic here in The Bahamas. Dr. Patterson distributed informative material on child abuse. She stressed that children have the right to be safe and it is time that we spoke out about what is taking place in our nation and protect our children.

Devard Darling brings fellow NFL players to assist in annual football camps

Bahamas native Deveard Darling continues the dream of him and his brother to bring football to the Bahamas, through the Devard and Devaughn Darling Football Camps, presented by his non-profit organization the As One Foundation. Fellow NFL Players Derrick Martin and Tre Stallings of the Baltimore Ravens, Larry Johnson, Bob Engram and Dwayne Bowe of the Kansas City Chiefs, and Darrius Hayward Bey of the Oakland Raiders, will assist young athletes with skill development, technique, and the fundamentals of American Football. Camps will be held in Freeport, Bahamas July 6 -7, at the Freeport Rugby Football Club on Settlers Way, and Nassau, Bahamas July 10 – 12, at Tom “The Bird” Grant Sports and Recreation Complex.

The purpose of the camp is to encourage young Bahamian athletes to pursue their education and dreams of playing American Football. Campers will have the opportunity to interact with p rominent sports figures who will act as coaches, leaders and mentors throughout the duration of the camps...

Trust me I understand your position, of being a religious Christian and making such statement or remark (of hypocrites) does not sit well with your religious beliefs...

Grand Bahama Island - This year's Grand Bahama Summer Junkanoo Festival dates were announced on June 24th by Betty Bethel, General Manager, Business Development of The Grand Bahama Ministry of Tourism.

Miss Bethel also announced three new public sector partners; Jarvin Roberts, C. Carey and Derek Nesbit who have come on board.

Last year's festival, in its new location at Taino Beach was a huge success!

This year's dates are as follows: July 10th, 16th, 23rd and 30th; and August 8th, from 6pm to 11pm.

Miss Universe 2008, Dayana Mendoza enjoys Atlantis

Paradise Island, The Bahamas - The reigning Miss Universe beauty who was crowned in 2008, Dayana Mendoza of Caracas, Venezuela enjoyed a stay at Atlantis this month. She was also visiting to participate in a press conference announcing details of the next Miss Universe Pageant with Kerzner and the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism.

Dayana Mendoza will be handing over her crown at the 2009 Miss Universe Pageant to be held this year at Atlantis in August.

Is there such a thing? Yes, but it is not called ‘menopause’ because there is no such event as ‘menses’ in a male’s life. A man’s drop in testosterone (the male hormone) is called ‘Andropause’. In my last article I told you a little about the important role of hormones to protect us from disease and support peak performance and wellbeing.

I start with the men today, because the coming weekend we celebrate our men as fathers. When a male has fathered a child, his most important biological purpose has been fulfilled. That does not mean that he then can sit back and be catered to, or go to look for another female to procreate. A father is also the protector and provider for his family. But this is another subject. Let me focus on what most men do not know about their bodies, what actually happens when they get older; their Andropause...

Grand Bahama Island - Saturday June 20th, 2009, The Bahamas Weekly News Team had the amazing opportunity to experience Grand Bahama Regatta 2009 out at sea.

Although there was little wind and rain came down at times, nothing can compare to being out at sea with the sloops during this serene cultural event. With Captain Don Delahay and first mate Cameron Mackey at the helm, the ride was smooth and there was ample opportunity to capture great video footage, photographs and interviews with sailors in their natural environment on the water.

With copious quantities of Sands Beer on board, we traversed the calm seas along side " The Island Gal" skippered by Marty Bullard and sponsored by Grand Bahama Island based, Bahamian Brewery & Beverage Co., the creators of " Sands Beer."

Doongalik announces, 'Save the Turtles' exhibition for August

Paradise Island, Bahamas - Doongalik Studios Art Gallery, located in Marina Village at Paradise Island has invited the 70 local artists it represents to participate in an environmentally conscious Art Exhibition entitled ‘SAVE THE TURTLES’ scheduled to coincide with the Miss Universe Pageant to be held this August on Paradise Island. The Official Opening will be held on the morning of Monday, August 10 and the Show will be on display until the end of August.

Manager of the Gallery, Pam Burnside stated, “Earlier this year Teleri Jones, one of our Abaco artists, suggested that we have a ‘Turtle Art Show’.
