Nassau, Bahamas - Natalie Warne, an American Film-maker and inspirational speaker, encouraged students in The Bahamas to work to make a change in the world at a talk at the Rainforest Theater on April 27th. About 150 students and parents gathered to listen to Natalie tell the story of her decision as a 17-year-old student to join the Invisible Children Organization. Her decision changed the direction of her life and started her on a journey that would take her across America and to Africa and, eventually, here to The Bahamas.

CORPUS CHRISTI — The Texas A&M–Corpus Christi men’s basketball team has signed Zane Knowles to a National Letter of Intent, Islanders coach Willis Wilson announced Wednesday. The native of Nassau, Bahamas, will have two years of eligibility remaining when he arrives for the 2012-13 season.

Grand Bahama Shipyard introduces Robotic Blasting

Freeport, Grand Bahama – New robotic blasting is now being used at the Grand Bahama Shipyard to expedite the work at the yard in Freeport. Training began a few weeks ago, teaching Bahamians to drive the highly technical environmental robot used for hull stripping.

Blaster and Painter Jarvis Pinder, an 11-year employee and Marvin Taylor a 4-year employee, are pictured training on the newest equipment being utilized at the world’s second largest ship repair yard in the Americas. “The new robotic blasting units make our work safer, easier, more efficient, and it goes much quicker than traditional blasting,” said Pinder.

Over the last few weeks I’ve gotten in the habit of listening to GuardianTalk Radio’s livestream. I catch Teej Grant’s “Coffee Break” and “The Darold Miller Show.” Honestly, it has become a bit of a distraction; I become far to engrossed to get anything done.

New Iguana Conservation Facility Opens on San Salvador

THE BAHAMAS - An important step forward has been taken in the protection of the endangered San Salvador iguana. The new San Salvador Iguana Conservation Centre, located at the Gerace Research Centre on San Salvador Island in the southern Bahamas, was opened on May 9th. The Centre will breed and raise the local iguanas until they are large enough to be safely released in selected areas around the island. The Bahamas National Trust and Audubon have teamed up to make things better for shorebirds in The Bahamas. 15 Andros students from Fresh Creek Primary and Central Andros High participated in a Shorebird Immersion Camp at FORFAR Field Station facilitated by Director of Education, Portia Sweeting, Science Officer, Predensa Moore and BNT Warden Wavell Hanna.

The Students learned about the coastal ecosystem which provides the foraging and nesting habitat for many shorebirds, acquired shorebird identification skills as well as shorebird monitoring protocols. Classroom sessions on shorebird identification and invasive species were combined with field experience as the students visited the rocky shore and collected specimens to be examined at the wet lab at the station and conducted point counts and sites along the shore...

Freeport, Grand Bahama - The second event in the Grand Bahama Cycling Club (G.B.C.C.) Points Series took place successfully today as cyclists took part in the first Time Trial of the Series. The event which was 12 miles in maximum distance also welcomed a few newcomers to the series in Jonathon Holmsten, Ken Roker and Dylan Glinton. Among those new comers to the series were also fist time competitors in the sport of cycling, which shows some growth in the sport as well.

With it being a time trial, you would think there would not be too much action on the road. However, Jonathon Holmsten still managed to set the course on fire with his stellar performance...

His wife, Mrs Mary Ingraham, thought that his chances of winning would have been greatly enhanced if women of property were permitted to vote as men were allowed. She, together with Mrs Mabel Walker, the wife of Dr CR Walker, a Member of Parliament for the Southern District in New Providence, actively began to agitate for women to have the right to vote on the same terms as men.
