Bahamas to return migrants to quake-ravaged Haiti

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – (AP) More than five dozen Haitian migrants detained as they sailed north through the Bahamas will be returned directly to the earthquake-ravaged country, the Bahamian prime minister said Monday.

Two Royal Bahamas Defense Force vessels intercepted a boat carrying the 62 Haitian on Saturday, Prime Minister Huber Ingraham said.

While the Bahamas has made it easier for Haitian immigrants already in the country to stay since the earthquake, Ingraham said the government will not change its policy toward undocumented migrants found at sea.

"We will do all we can to assist Haiti except we cannot absorb Haiti's population in the Bahamas," Ingraham told The Associated Press...

The Washington Informer, the paper that I worked with in Washington, D.C., as news editor for twelve years, is the sponsor of the District of Columbia Spelling Bee. After attending my first Scripps Bee in 1982, I promised myself that whenever I returned to The Bahamas I would do whatever I could to get The Bahamas involved in this competition. NASSAU, The Bahamas – The Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International (HSMAI) honored The Islands of The Bahamas with two of the coveted Adrian Awards for web marketing excellence for their winning entries in the 53rd annual Adrian Awards Competition. The Bahamas accepted these awards at last night’s 20th annual black-tie awards gala held at the Marriott Marquis in New York, NY. The HSMAI Adrian Awards Competition is the largest and most prestigious travel marketing competition globally. There were nearly 1,100 entries from around the world judged by top executives from all sectors of the industry.

SHANGHAI—China heralded a major bust of computer hackers to underscore its pledge to help enhance global online security, with state media saying officials had shut what they called the country's largest distributor of tools used in malicious Internet attacks.

Three people were arrested on suspicion of making hacking tools available online, the state-run Xinhua news agency said on Monday. Their business, known as Black Hawk Safety Net, operated through the now-shuttered Web site 3800cc.com and generated around $1 million in income from its over 12,000 subscribers, the report said.

The spirit of Valentine

The spirit, concept and celebration of Valentine’s Day is based upon love in remembrance of a priest name Valentine; who came to defend marriage and love in Rome during the rule of Emperor Claudius II.

The Emperor was having difficulties in getting soldiers to join his military leagues. He believed that the reason was that roman men did not want to leave their loves or families. As a result, Claudius cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome.

This was when a priest Valentine came to defend love in the empire. Valentine began to secretly marry couples despite the emperors orders. When Emperor Claudius was informed of these ceremonies Valentine was sent to prison where he remained until his death on February 14 in the year 270...

Nassau, Bahamas – The Rotary Clubs of The Bahamas (District 7020) have worked diligently to raise funds to assist Haiti after the devastating earthquake struck the country on January 12^thaffecting up to 3 million people.

The 17 Rotary clubs in Haiti with a membership of approximately 350 and the 9 Rotary clubs in The Bahamas with approximately 400 Rotarians have worked jointly to ensure that the supplies and donations provided are properly distributed.

In the first 3 weeks since the earthquake, apart from other forms of donations, over $500,000 was raised which included over $250,000 from the various Bahamas Rotary clubs as well as the Telethon. The 4 hour “Help us help Haiti Telethon” organized by Rotary and the Chamber of Commerce with help from a number of other supporters held on January 25^th and 26^th, raised over $250,000...

I listened to a talk show yesterday and the discussion was on gambling in the Bahamas: (casinos/casino resorts, numbers etc). I paid full attention and I said I will do a little investigation.

As some of you know by now, I admitted that I used to gamble (via raffle tickets for the Church, scratch and win giveaways, playing over and under (craps) and/or throwing quarters in the cup at the carnival, dropping my name in sweepstakes at fast food restaurants, gas stations, furniture stores etc along with purchasing shares in the local or foreign stock markets which are all forms of Gambling (Games of Chance)...

Celebration Cruise Line Changing Itinerary to Grand Bahama Island

Celebration Cruise Line’s management announced this week that it will be changing the itinerary of the Bahamas Celebration exclusively to Grand Bahama Island. The new itinerary is scheduled to begin on March 15, 2010. The last cruise into Nassau will be March 12, departing out of Nassau on March 14.

The cruise line was quick to point out the decision was in no way reflective of any negative experience had in Nassau and Paradise Island.

A BAHAMIAN FILM whose central motif is the transforming effect of rain opened the Flow Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival on Tuesday night at a gala event held at MovieTowne Invaders Bay, which saw artists, film-lovers, diplomats and Government ministers attend.

Rain, directed by Maria Govan, closely follows its title character as she comes to discover her biological mother after the death of her grandmother. Set in the Bahamas, the film features Irma P Hall (who won a Special Jury prize at Cannes in 2004 for her performance in the Cohen brother’s remake of The Ladykillers) as well as Emmy nominee and star of the Sheild, CCH Pounder.

150 persons employed on Ministry of Works projects

Why is Change so darn Difficult??

Well it’s mid February and if you made any New Years resolution, it might be starting to slip from your memory. Or it is so stuck in your mind that you are beating yourself up because you have not lived up to your commitment. We make these resolutions because there is something we want to change, adjust or try something new. But what happens? We have the best intentions, we have great ideas, great passion at the time, and something happens as the days go by.

One thing that happens with an idea is we pick something that is too big. The goal is too far away and too large for us to reach it, and in a world of instant gratification we want in a few weeks not a few months. We have to remember whatever it is that we are wanting to change has been there for years, it does not just transform in a week or two. And what is it that we are really wanting from the change? Is it a fantasy of how we will feel with the change or the things that we will get?

Proper Plans must be put in place to Mitigate against Disasters

NASSAU, Bahamas -- The disaster that occurred as a result of an earthquake in Haiti on Tuesday, January 12, should serve as a lesson to Bahamians, said Minister of Lands and Local Government the Hon Byran Woodside.

Freeport, Bahamas – Management and staff of The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited (GBPA) and Group of Companies (PGL) recently made official donations to the Bahamas Red Cross Society, Grand Bahama Centre on behalf of the Haiti Relief Campaign.
