Latin
Classes at the YMCA Grand Bahama at minimum cost to parents.
Students can master the English Language through the study of
Latin.
Latin
Grammar is the best grounding for Education. It gives students greater
understanding of English. It also is the root of the Romance languages
of French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian. Studying
Latin will benefit those students who go on to study any of these languages. And because over 80% of English words have
Latin roots, student's vocabulary significantly increases, along with their writing skills.
Classes are offered to Students from Grades 2 to 6.
No prior knowledge of
Latin is required.
Classes will be held at the YMCA on Tuesdays at 3:30PM and Saturdays at 9:00AM.
Classes begin February 4th and will end March 31st (a total of 8 weeks)
Course materials will be provided, however, students are encouraged to bring a notebook and pen/pencil to each lesson.
The curriculum is based on the Christian
Latin
pronunciation which is closer to modern languages. It is used in
prayers and in all of the great religious music of our classical
composers.
A note to parents
Our approach to
Latin
grammar is to consider it a basic subject like arithmetic, which is to
be mastered by consistent effort over a period of years. With that said,
students will need to practice assignments which will be sent home
weekly. This is a fun enriched course and we believe the benefits will
last the students for a lifetime. And ultimately develop in them a love
of learning.
