RBC Royal Bank Team Members Host Successful Food Drive In Support Of Hands For Hunger

Nassau, Bahamas – A motivated team of RBC Royal Bank employees recently hosted a Food Drive in partnership with hunger-relief charity, Hands For Hunger. The group of 14 Securities and Lending Compliance Centre employees initiated the plan and set a goal to raise 200 lbs. of canned goods and non-perishable items. As a result of the group’s determination and the generosity of the public, the RBC Food Drive was wildly successful, raising the anticipated 200 pounds of food and $600 cash in addition! RBC also provided a Day of Service grant of $1,000 to Hands for Hunger, further increasing the impact of the initiative.

“We are thrilled with the outcome of the RBC Food Drive. The fortitude of the Securities and Lending Compliance Centre team is commendable as is the generosity of the community who wholeheartedly supported this initiative,” praised Jan Knowles, Manager, Corporate Communications, RBC Royal Bank. Ms. Knowles continued, “This donation, equivalent to 1,800 meals, will be far-reaching once distributed to Hands For Hunger’s network of partnering agencies, a program we are truly proud to support.”

Local non-profit organization, Hands For Hunger is able to equate every pound of food donated-- to one meal back into the community, either through its fresh, surplus Food Rescue Program or through the collection of canned goods. The mission and vision is to nourish chronically hungry men, women, and children. Since the organization’s beginnings, nearly six years ago, Hands For Hunger celebrated a milestone of providing more than 600,000 meals from high-quality, nutritious food that would otherwise go to waste.

It was however, in January of this year, that Hands For Hunger introduced a new sustainable food program, The H4H Shelves, which seeks to procure, store, and distribute canned goods and non-perishable food items. As a result of RBC’s continued support, The H4H Shelves have been replenished just in time for a large distribution of shelf-stable items to Hands For Hunger’s 13 recipient outreach agencies. In turn, these social service agencies provide approximately 9,500 meals per week to Bahamians seeking emergency food assistance.

Since 2008, RBC Royal Bank has been a champion of the Hands For Hunger cause. Their contributions toward hunger-relief in the Bahamas have been significant, not only providing support monetarily but through the giving of their time. Last year alone, RBC sponsored three of Hands For Hunger’s major annual fund-raisers: Food For Thought, Paradise Plates, and Holiday Gift Wrapping. Additionally, RBC initiated independent volunteer activities, engaging many RBC team members who donated their much valued time and services in support of Hands For Hunger’s vision of a hunger-free Bahamas.

“Our food rescue, food storage, education and awareness programs are able to develop with the passing of each year largely in part tof RBC’s unwavering support. We are so grateful for their enthusiastic commitment to the fight against hunger,” said Abigail Asgaralli, Executive Director, Hands For Hunger.

As the organization gears up for World Hunger Day, globally recognized on May 28th each year, there are many ways to get involved and effect positive change in the community.
