Freeport
, Grand Bahama - The Grand Bahama branch of the Bahamas National Trust is pleased to announce that they will be hosting their first Farmer’s Market called "Da Market" on Saturday February 25th from 9am to 1pm at the Rand Nature Centre.
The concept will be an open Farmer's Market where participants can sell fresh produce, plants, hand crafted items, homemade teas, oils and more. Following the success of Nassau BNT markets, held monthly at The Retreat Gardens, Village Road, the GB BNT is hoping to offer an outlet for locals to sell their specialty items.
Cecelia Bodie, GB BNT Education Officer, met with interested members in January and their first event is now scheduled for this Saturday starting at 9am. "We hope this opportunity will allow members and nonmembers to showcase some of the unique items they create as well as sell their goods to the local community,” said Bodie. “There's nothing like fresh grown fruits and vegetables or home made jellies and jams."

Persons interested in participating can call 352-5438 for more information or stop by the Rand Nature Centre for an application. There is no registration fee for the first two markets, but persons interested in Da Market must pre-register to participate. Admission is FREE to anyone coming to shop at the market and the Trust is hoping many will turn out to support these local farmers.
The success of the farmer's market comes on the heels of many countries encouraging sustainable food production and buying local produced items. Eric Carey, BNT’s Executive Director explained that since the economic downturn, the Bahamian society has seen an increase in subsistence farming and more home based ventures. The Trust is always looking for more ways to not only assist our members, but to reach out to the wider Bahamian community and engage them about the important work of The BNT. Farmer’s Markets are wonderful places to achieve this goal and we are looking forward to seeing the Grand Bahama Market grow into another successful event.
Currently the GB BNT plans to have "Da Market” from February through to May and then restart in October to December, on the last Saturday of each month.

The Bahamas National Trust was created by an Act of Parliament in 1959 to build and manage the national park system of the Bahamas. Possibly the only non-governmental organization in the world charged with such a responsibility the TRUST, as it is commonly known works daily to conserve and protect the natural resources of The Bahamas, through stewardship and education for present and future generations.
