Freeport, Bahamas - The EARTHCARE Eco Kids learned about the History of Grand Bahama Islands, the blue holes, the mangroves and birds from Rudy Sawyer, owner/operator of Blue Green Outdoors on Saturday November 19th, 2016. Students from the Beacon School, Martin Town Primary, Sunland Baptist Academy, Freeport Primary, Freeport Gospel Chapel School, Hugh Campbell Primary, St. Georges High School, and Bishop Michael Eldon School were all in attendance.

Gail Woon, Founder of EARTHCARE and a Director of Save The Bays observed, “Rudy Sawyer of Blue Green Outdoors and his team of Leroy Glinton and Mark Clarke gave the EARTHCARE Eco Kids an experience to remember.”

Rudy Sawyer, owner/operator of Blue Green Outdoors, “It always gives me pleasure to share nature and the great outdoors with young folk and Saturday’s field trip to Crabbing Bay where we kayaked and snorkeled the blue hole with the EARTHCARE Eco kids was no different. I enjoyed it totally, and the kids were very interested and interesting; loved the interchange with them particularly on the telling of the story of Freeport and Grand Bahama.”

Mr. Sawyer presented the history of how the City of Freeport came into being beginning with the story of a young Wallace Groves. He detailed the times before Mr. Groves came to The Bahamas and how Mr. Groves came to build the City of Freeport, designed to accommodate a population of 250,000. He also told the students about the ecosystems of Grand Bahama and touched on saltwater intrusion from hurricanes affecting the Caribbean pines in some areas.

At Crabbing Bay, some students went on a guided snorkel tour of the blue holes with Rudy Sawyer as the guide. At the same time the other EARTHCARE Eco Kids went kayaking with Guide, Leroy Glinton. For Mother/Daughter team, Rochelle Manchester and her daughter, Tylea, it was Rochelle’s first time kayaking. Though a little nervous at first, Mrs. Manchester ended up coming and going back out again, enjoying the kayaking experience.

From Crabbing Bay, our eager group went to McLeans Town, where the students looked at mangroves and the coastline. We then headed to, what is arguably, Pelican Point’s most beautiful beach and then it was back to civilization at the end of the field trip.

Rochelle Manchester, EARTHCARE Eco Kids Parent said, “Living on Grand Bahama one would think you know enough about the island. During this field trip I learned so much information about Grand Bahama and the developer, Wallace Groves that I did not know. Even after the tour, my daughter Rachelle was still asking questions, so it really piqued her interest to know more. Tylea and I truly enjoyed kayaking. It was my first time so it took a bit of trial and error before I got the hang of it but once I did it was a great experience, one I’d do again for sure. Now I can mark that off my bucket list!”

Daphne Riley, parent of EARTHCARE Eco Kid, Tyler Riley added, “Tyler’s been telling everyone… said it was the best trip yet. Thanks GW for giving the group such an amazing opportunity to educate while having fun!! Tyler was excited about exploring the Blue Hole . . . and his very 1st dive of course. I hope to have him research more on blue holes.”

The activities were made possible with the help of Blue Green Outdoors, the Kevin Tomlinson Academy, Requal Belle-Smith, Audrey Jolly, and Tyrie Moss, EARTHCARE Eco Kids Facilitators, Savanna and Havana Gibson, EARTHCARE Eco Kids Team Leaders.

The EARTHCARE Eco Kids who participated include:-

Deavion Knowles, Dawne Bullard, Kellon Albury, Tyler Riley, Nathanael Smith, Shakada Hutson, Rachelle Manchester, Tylea Manchester, Phebe Thompson, Rizpah Thompson, Keon Placide, and Demari Clarke. .
