Nassau, Bahamas – Last weekend the Bahamas National Trust (BNT) participated in an exciting opportunity to highlight forestry in The Bahamas by hosting the Forestry Unit of the Ministry of the Environment and Housing at the BNT Primeval Forest National Park. They were also pleased that the Minister of the Environment and Housing, Hon. Kenred Dorsett, was able to attend and tour the park and see the visitor services facilities there.

“Minister Dorsett was overjoyed being at the park,” said Cameron Saunders, BNT Deputy Park Warden. “He was impressed with the design of the Visitor Centre, the layout of the park and the environmentally friendly composting toilets, which he felt should be emulated in all parks.”

The Primeval Forest, which is located in Southwest New Providence, is remarkably undisturbed and the forest is a fantastic habitat for plant life as well as various species of wildlife. In the sinkholes and caverns many fossil and sub-fossil remains of Bahamian fauna as well as Lucayan and Bahamian artifacts have been discovered.

The Ministry team used the forest as the backdrop for a short film they plan to air on local stations on as a part of upcoming Forestry Week celebrations from 16th – 21st of March.

Eric Carey BNT’s Executive Director noted: “The Trust is always happy to provide support to the Ministry and its programmes. We are excited to be joining them in the celebration of Forestry Week, and are delighted the chose to highlight the Primeval Forest.”

The Primeval Forest National Park is the only park in New Providence which protects this vital area and the BNT is incredibly proud that their park was chosen as a highlight of the film.

The Trust is encouraging everyone to watch the film and to celebrate Forestry day, March 21st, by visiting this breathtaking park which will be celebrating its year anniversary on that same day. Look for more news on the BNT Facebook page, plans are for a great family day adventure are to be announced.
