Nassau, Bahamas - Hands For Hunger is set to host their
3rd Annual Food For Thought educational forum presented by RBC Royal
Bank on May 28th, which coincides with World Hunger Day. Held at The
British Colonial Hilton between 6:00pm to 8:00pm, this provocative
series of discussions moderated by M’wale Rahming of Public Domain and
led by a diverse panel of local and regional experts who will speak to
the topic of The Future Of Food in the Bahamas.
Hands
For Hunger, the local charity organization committed to the elimination
of hunger and food waste, is perhaps best known for its Food Rescue
Program that has served the New Providence community since 2008. This
primary function of the organization seeks to repurpose high-quality,
fresh and prepared foods from restaurant, hotel, farm, wholesale, and
bakery donors to distribute the goods back into the community through 14
recipient outreach agencies. Although, Hands For Hunger has been
successful in providing the equivalent of 750,000 meals, a part of its
mandate also includes social consciousness by education and awareness
and forging strategic partnerships with agricultural initiatives in line
with the organization’s mission to support national food security.
“Hands
For Hunger considers all forms of hunger and food-related issues a
cause for our attention. This year we explore the topic of The Future Of
Food on a globally recognized occasion- World Hunger Day,” shared
Zeleka Knowles, Executive Director, Hands For Hunger. She continued, “I
encourage the public to attend the Food For Thought discussion. Along
with our esteemed panel of industry professionals, we will explore best
practices to support local agriculture and agri-business. My personal
hope is that these discussions contribute to a larger, on-going dialogue
on achieving national food security.”
Most recently, as CARICOM
discussions turned their attention to the country of Guyana for guidance
on their model of excellence for national food security, Hands For
Hunger sought to invite specialists in sustainable rural development to
present on May 28th. Providing the country’s and his own unique
perspective at Food For Thought is Mr. Arnold Demendonca from the
Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) from
Georgetown, Guyana, who is traveling specifically to attend and speak at
Hands For Hunger’s event.
Joining the forum from Marsh Harbour,
Abaco is Mr. John Hedden, formerly a consultant to The Department of
Agriculture, who is an authority on sustainable development,
infrastructure, and export. Mr. Hedden announced, “I am pleased to join
Hands For Hunger’s hosted discussion on food security as this is
certainly a topic everyone should take personally and seriously.
Relevant to the topics of The Future Of Food, I plan to present best
practices for sustainability, having cultivated agricultural experiences
in the Bahamas for more than 20 years.”
Additionally, Executive
Chef Simeon Hall Jr. will provide a demonstration on sourcing locally
produced and seasonal foods for meal planning that is both health and
budget conscious.
Other offerings of Food For Thought
will include h’ordeuvres, cocktails, raffles and prizes; and the ten
dollar ($10.00) admission fee grants one complementary chance to win a
spectacular door prize with a value of $175.00. For additional
