Freeport, The Bahamas - More than 200 supporters donned their finest Sunday attire for the Cancer Association of Grand Bahama's first "Happy Tea Garden Party" fundraiser in Princess Isle on February 21. The elegant affair was held in aid of local cancer patients.

President of the Cancer Association of Grand Bahama Norma Headley said the organisation was pleased with the turnout, adding that she anticipated just over 100 guests.

"It doesn't matter what event we have," Mrs Headley said, "the community always supports us 100 per cent, and this event was no exception."

Guests to the garden tea party indulged in sweet treats and afternoon teas as they enjoyed performances by the Bahama Brass Band of the Church of God of Prophecy, Patrice Johnson and company, and Minerva McIntosh.

"When we planned the tea party, we wanted to create an event that would provide entertainment and relaxation; something that the community would really enjoy and I think we achieved that," Mrs Headley said. "Everyone said they were so impressed and that they can't wait for the next one, so we're very pleased."

As with every Cancer Association fundraiser, all proceeds from the event go directly toward assisting cancer patients with purchasing medication and/or airfare for travel related to medical treatments. While providing this support for cancer patients is the organisation's main objective, Mrs Headley said the Cancer Association also seeks to promote cancer education and the significance of early detection.

Mrs Headley, a cancer survivor of 30 years, said her mission is to further develop a support network for cancer patients, survivors and families affected by cancer that will help remove the "stigma" associated with the illness and show the Grand Bahama community that cancer is not a death sentence.

The Cancer Association of Grand Bahama is a non-profit organisation established in 1993 to assist residents who have been affected by cancer. Under its motto "Educate and Inform", the organisation hosts fundraisers, health clinics, and seminars year-round to promote cancer awareness in the wider Grand Bahama community. Through the Comfort Haven, the organisation also provides hospice care for terminally ill patients. The private facility is support by corporate donors and private sponsors.
