Exuma, Bahamas -
The Bahamas Humane Society along with
the Ministry of Agriculture K-9 Control Unit responded to the cry from
the Exuma community in reference to the large amount of roaming dogs
on the island.
With the help of the Exuma Foundation
along with Margaret Barton and friends from Montana and volunteers from
Canada and London, we were successful in holding spay and neuter clinic
from 21st to 23rd January 2010. From The Forrest
in the north to Williams Town in the south was covered amounting in
over a hundred dogs/puppies being spayed and neutered (ages 4 weeks
to 3 years ). This exercise was very educational, parents and children
were allowed to view the neutering of their pets if wanted to and many
took the opportunity, this helped to dispel the myth about having your
pet operated on. Cats and kittens were not turned away they too were
also neutered all twenty five of them.
Spaying and neutering will always be
in the minds of the children who experience this and to see how their
pets will now stay at home and roam less, this will foster many responsible
animal owners in the future on the Island of Exuma.
The Bahamas Humane Society wishes to
thank The Exuma Foundation, Regatta Point Resort, Local Administrator’s
Office Exuma, BAARK and the many volunteers for making this all happen.
The people of Exuma must be commended for turning out in droves to bring
their animals, also waiting on them to recover and allowing BHS staff
and volunteers to pick their animals up and return them to their homes.
Stephen Turnquest Executive Director
of The Bahamas Humane Society insist that they will continue to reach
out to the islands that are in need of their help and asked that the
community continue to support these efforts by sending donations to
The Bahamas Humane Society in care of “Who Let The dogs Out” Free
Spay/Neuter Program P.O. Box N-242.
