Nassau, The Bahamas - Finishing high school for some marks the end of an academic journey, a time to start looking for a job. For a handful of them however, it marks the beginning of a new journey that prepares them to be leaders in The Bahamas and stewards of the environment. The Bahamian Environmental Stewards Scholarship (BESS) programme is designed for students who have finished High School and are interested in the marine sciences. Those selected to the programme participate in a 14-week course at The Island School living on a sustainable campus, learning about the marine environment, and taking part in on-going research projects. Participants go on to complete a four-month internship with a conservation minded organization, such as Bahamas National Trust, The Nature Conservancy, or the Bahamas Reef Environmental Education Foundation (BREEF)...

Nassau, Bahamas - Mrs. Edreisa Johnson, mother of two was the lucky winner of a laundry list of prizes valued over one-thousand dollars.  This past April, Solomon’s Super Center launched its Mother’s Day promotion with a different twist.  The competition was opened to mothers in Nassau and Grand Bahama where they were invited to share their thoughts of motherhood in a fifty word essay.  Mrs. Johnson’s essay was selected over more than one hundred entries, resulting in her walking away with a stainless steel Movado watch, a bouquet of flowers, Blackberry cell phone, basket of popular fragrances, gift certificate for a day at the spa, and a gift certificate from Solomon’s Super Center...

“Gifts for Good” raises a total of $40,000 for charities - Oct 14, 2010 - 11:56:05 AM

Nassau, Bahamas –  AML Foods Limited, announced today that they were successful in raising $40,000 during their recent “Gifts for Good” program, in support of twenty local charities in New Providence and Grand Bahama.  The program ran during the month of August and each of the charities received $2,000. 
 
President and CEO, Gavin Watchorn said, “Although we fell short of our initial goal by $10,000, we are still very pleased with our overall efforts.  AML Foods Limited initially agreed to match the donations collected up to $25,000, but the response we received highlighted the tough economic times that we are facing and the great need of many in our communities.  Because of this we decided to increase our donation to $30,000.  We are indeed happy that we were still able to meet the challenge...

The Bahamas - Heralding the start of a new era of growth and development, Mr. Gavin Watchorn, President and CEO, announces effective immediately, the renaming of Abaco Markets Limited to AML Foods Limited.   The name change, which had been approved by the Company’s shareholders at their July 21st Annual General Meeting, was recently formally approved by the Registrar of Companies.

The Company has its roots and origins in Abaco, having been established there in 1989 when a local group launched an initial public offering. As the Company grew its operations in New Providence and Grand Bahama, the use of the word ‘Abaco’ became less appropriate.   With the divestment of Cost Right Abaco in March 2009...

released its first quarter results for the period ending April 30, 2009.

“We are very pleased with our Group’s continued profitability - $1.043m for the quarter compared to that of $82k last year - despite the increasingly challenging economic climate,” says Mr. Gavin Watchorn, President, Abaco Markets Limited. The sales increase, up $2.2m over the same period the previous year, was driven by a 12% sales increase in the Company’s food distribution division and while its franchise division sales remained flat with the same period the prior year, this was accomplished with one store less...

Abaco Markets releases Fourth Quarter Results‏ - Mar 19, 2009 - 9:38:40 PM

Nassau, Bahamas –March 18, 2009: Abaco Markets Limited released its fourth quarter results for the period ending January 31, 2009. Highlights for the quarter include:

-    Net profit of $1.533m for the quarter compared to that of $628k for the same period the previous year.
-    Net profit of $2m for the year compared to that of $2.177m for the same period the previous year.
-    Sales increase to $26.46m for the quarter - an increase of 17.1% - along with an increase in customer transactions of 13% over the same period the previous year.
-    Gross margin improvement by 0.9%, driven by reduction in shrink as a percentage of sales by 20% while the absolute shrink dollar amount remained the same as the previous year...

Cost Right Abaco closing - Mar 10, 2009 - 8:54:02 AM

Nassau, The Bahamas - Abaco Markets Limited announces the closure of its Cost Right Abaco store today (March 9th) due to its non-performance despite significant investment and restructuring.

 

Cost Right Abaco was closed at 6pm today as senior Management met with its employees. All employees will receive full severance packages with the majority of the 14 person staff receiving their packages immediately and some remaining on staff to assist with the transfer of both product and equipment to the Group’s other locations.   The Company has also offered continued coverage on the Group’s health insurance plan for up to 6 months to enable affected employees to find alternative coverage.
