6th Commonwealth Youth Games to be Hosted in The Bahamas in 2017

Nassau, New Providence - The launch of the 6th Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) preparation commenced June 2nd with a press conference at the Media Center of the Thomas A. Robinson Stadium. The event which is 13 months away will be held in July 2017 and will host some 3,500 athletes, coaches, officials and press personal from 71 countries in 9 sporting disciplines. It is expected than in excess of 1000 athletes between the ages of 14 and 18 will participate in the various sports.

Sports disciplines competing in the games include athletics, judo, swimming, cycling, beach volleyball, soccer, tennis and rugby-7. The games are being chaired by Mr. Wellington Miller Bahamas Olympic Committee (BOC) President and the Managing Director is Mr Romell Knowles Secretary General of the BOC. There are three Deputy Managing Directors to include Mr. Grafton Ifill Jr., Drumeco Archer and Lynden Maycock.

The keynote address came from Minister Youth, Sports and Culture Dr. Daniel Johnson who spoke about the efforts being made to advance sports Tourism. Minister was particularly proud that Nassau will be become the first smart island in the world. The Minister's presentation was followed by a flag raising ceremony where the Bahamian and games flags were hoisted.

Bahamian youth are expected to participate in all disciplines with Athletics taking center stage. Let the count down begin!
