Alfred Sears salutes Shaunae Miller on her Olympic gold achievement
Aug 17, 2016 - 10:13:30 AM

Nassau, Bahamas – Alfred M. Sears, Queens Counsel, PLP Candidate for Fort Charlotte, congratulates Shaunae Miller on her win.

Shaunae Miller's last night personified the Bahamian spirit. She was determined; she was focused on her destination and destiny; she refused to be dominated; and she was willing to sacrifice to achieve her goal. Shaunae was tough and beautiful in the moment. An Olympic gold medal is the result.

As we congratulate Shaunae, it is fitting to recognize that her gold medal performance was not the result of wishful thinking, or spur of the moment decision-making. Shaunae is one of the nation’s premiere 200-meter runners, and her decision not to contest that event in order to focus on the 400 meters was not a unanimously popular one. Shaunae, however, decided that she would sacrifice the possibility of two medals to focus on the one that meant the most to her, for whatever her own reasons may be. And as we all saw just after 10P.M. last night, her decision was right.

And those who know Shaunae know that this win was not a short-term achievement, nor was it an accident. She and her family have been

committed to an Olympic gold medal for the last four years, and that goal has guided her decisions and training and choices.

For all these reasons – because she is determined, because she showed foresight and the requisite commitment of a champion to sacrifice some things in order to achieve a bigger, more important thing, because she is willing to work and in the final analysis, to do what is required to win – for these reasons and more, we congratulate Shaunae Miller on her gold medal performance in the 400 meters at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Her achievement inspired a nation, and no doubt, a world.

As we embark on our revolution for a new vision for The Bahamas, and seek to win leadership of the Progressive Liberal Party, we see Shaunae’s victory as a teaching moment for our country to show the same clarity of vision, the same determination, the same grit, the same perseverance and the same willingness to sacrifice ourselves for gold. Inspired by this great lesson, we shall show the same humble gratitude to Almighty God after we cross the finish line.

Shaunae Miller, we salute you. You are a true Bahamian champion. You have inspired all Bahamians to fulfill our destiny.
