Freeport, Bahamas - On Saturday, 19th February the Grand Bahama Girls’ Soccer League closed out the year with several exciting games played in its three divisions. The games were followed by awards, presentations and tributes.

The game of the day was in the Gecko Division (10-12 yr old). Savemore Food Store coached by Gerrard Bernon edged out Polymers Fury coached by Mike Hailwood in a nail biter. Marissa Vietti of Savemore scored in the middle of the second half. Polymers had a number of chances but was not able to capitalize. The teams have been battling for first place all season with only one point between the two teams. Polymers had been leading since the last time they played Savemore but the girls on Savemore came ready to collect the hardware on Saturday. They were very composed on the field and it paid off as they were crowned winners of the league. Both teams played exceptionally well and the exciting game drew a number of fans to watch the display of talent exhibited by the girls.

Both teams will be treated to a pizza party on March 5th as Polymers Fury and Savemore Food Store were tied for the best attendance record in the Gecko Division.

Scores from the other games that day are as follows:

Iguana Division games: Municipal Motors beat Picadilly Panthers 2-0; Adnil Marine beat Ocean Motion 2-0 ; and Krosstown Courage beat Gators Rent a Car 3-0

Gecko Division games:  Savemore beat Polymers Fury 1-0 ; and The Bahamas Weekly beat Sawyers 4-0

Courtney assists in the Saturday league by assisting where needed- whether it is coaching a team or refereeing a game.

A special presentation was made to Rev Scott Kirkland who has been an outstanding coach in the league from 2006.

Coach Scott played at a semi professional level in his younger days in Scotland and over the past 5 years ,  he has shared his vast knowledge of the game with the girls in the league. Coach Scott is the minister at the Presbyterian Kirk Church in Lucaya and is leaving the island in April. Scott and Anita’s two daughters Priscilla and Sarah play soccer in the league and were presented with gifts from their respected teams. The entire family will be missed by our close knit soccer family. We wish them all the best and maybe a soccer trip to Scotland may be brewing in the not to distant future.

Pete Beirne and Jackelo Pierre were presented with a gift for keeping the grounds maintained and keeping the club open during the soccer session on Saturdays. The organizers also thanked Rob Speller and his committee for their support of the growth of girls’ soccer at the Rugby Club.

Special thanks to Stuart and Gillian Garner who continue to work diligently in the background each week. Stuart helps set up and break down the field each week.  Gillian takes on the duties of registration and is the field marshall and time keeper on the field.
