Saturday evening, July 23rd was a time Bahamian Anthonique Strachan will not soon forget.
With her coach Dianne Woodside , and
her High School Principal Sonia Knowles in the stands at the Ansin Sports
Complex in Miramar, Florida, Strachan in one fell swoop set a world
junior best time of 22.70sec for 2011, a new Pan American Junior Championships
record, as well as a new Bahamian national Junior record in the 200m.
Strachan did all that with a strained Achilles tendon.
She seemed to be in trouble about twenty
meters out but put on the after-burners and finished well ahead of her
competitors Kai Selvon of Trinidad & Tobago and Jessica Davis of
The United States who clocked 22.97sec each. Kelvon beat Davis by one
thousandth of a second.
Prior to this race Davis, who attends
the University of Southern California, had the second best time in the
world, a 22.84sec. Aurieyall Scott of the USA had the best time of 22.83sec.
Three months ago Strachan was tying
a record set at the Carifta Games in 2011. That record was 22.93sec,
set by Veronica Campbell-Brown double Olympic Gold medalist in 2004
and 2008.
For her accomplishment then Strachan
was voted the Most Outstanding Athlete of the 2011 Carifta Games and
given the Austin Sealy Award.
Just last Sunday in Mayaguez, Strachan
finished second to Bahamian Nivea Smith in the 200m at the Sr. Central
American and Caribbean Championships.
Now there only Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie
(22.19sec), Pauline Davis-Thompson (22.27sec), Savatheda Fynes (22.32sec),
and Chandra Sturrup (22.33sec) have better performances in the 200m.
Nivea Smith has a best of 22.80sec.
Sheniqua Ferguson a best of 22.85sec.
Strachan won a bronze medal on Friday
at the Pan Am Jr. Track and Field Championships in 11.46sec and
she has a best of 11.38sec done in winning the Carifta Fames in April.
