Nassau, Bahamas - It was a busy track and field year for The Bahamas. The Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA) just recently held their annual awards to honour outstanding athletes of the year.
The following is a recap of accomplishments by the country in 2011 at international events.
The international 2011 Track and Field
season started in Trinidad and Tobago and ended in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Anthonique Strachan received the Austin
Sealy Award for the Most Outstanding Athlete of the Games.
She was the fifth Bahamian in history
and first since Debbie Ferguson in 1995 to do this.

Two boys and two girls are in each
division.
The Bahamas finished second to Barbados.
In the eleven and twelve division,
Branson Rolle finished seventh overall.
Blayre Catalyn finished eleventh overall
in that division and set a new record in the 60m.
In the 13-14 division Ieisha Taylor
finished sixth overall, the best performance for the Bahamas.
Andrea Ferguson finished eighth overall,
winning the Gold medal in the Shot Put.
Kinard Rolle won a Gold medal in the
1200m and finished eighth overall in that division.
IAAF World Youth Championships

The Bahamas won three Gold medals:
Shaunae Miller won the 400m in 51.84sec
a new Bahamian national Junior record. She had clocked 51.85sec for
a new record at the BTC National Jr. & Sr. Championships in Grand
Bahama.
Stephen Newbold ran 20.89sec, a Personal
best to capture the Gold medal in the 200m.
Latario Collie-Minns jumped 16.06m
(52’-81/2”) on the way to a victory in the Triple jump. His twin
Lathone Collie- Minns won the Bronze medal with a performance of 15.51m
(50’10-3/4”)
This was the best ever world performance
of a Bahamian Track and Field team as they finished fourth place overall
behind USA, Kenya, and Jamaica.

Mayaguez, Puerto Rico
July 15-17th
Bianca Stuart broke the Bahamian National
Record in the Long Jump with a 6.81m (22’4-1/4”) jump. The old record
of 6.80m (22’3-3/4”) was set by Shonel Ferguson in 1982 and tied
by Jackie Edwards in 1996.
This performance tied the Championships
record by Elva Goulbourne of Jamaica.
Nivea Smith won the 200m in 22.80sec,
tying her personal best.
Michael Mathieu won the 200m in 20.60sec.
Trevor Barry captured the High Jump
with a jump of 2.28m (7’5-1/4”).
On the last event of the championships
The Bahamas won the Men’s 4x400m in 3:01.33, their best of the year.
Ramon Miller finished in second place
to Trinidad & Tobago’s Reny Quow in the 400m in 45.56sec.
Ramon Higgs jumped 7.75m (25’5-1/4”)
in the long jump to finish third.
The Women’s 4x100m relay team of
Va’Lonee Robinson, Nivea Smith, Cache Armbrister and Anthonique Strachan
finished third in 45.56sec.
Katrina Seymour finished third in the
400m hurdles in her first senior competition in a new National Junior
record of 57.24sec.
Anthonique Strachan Sets World Seasonal
Junior Best
Miramar, Florida
July 22-24th
At the Pan American Junior Track &
Field Championships in Miramar, Florida on Sunday, July 24th
Austin Sealy Award Winner Anthonique Strachan set a world Junior seasonal
best of 22.70sec.
This was also a new Bahamian National
Junior record. The old record was held by Sheniqua Ferguson at 22.85sec.
Strachan also won the Bronze medal
in the 100m in 11.46sec.
Other Gold medals were won by Katrina
Seymour in the 400m Hurdles, 57.87sec, and the Girls 4x100m Relay, 45.04sec
This relay was made up of Devynne Charlton,
Carmiesha Cox, V’Alonee Robinson, and Anthonique Strachan.
Two Silver medals were won by Ryan
Ingraham in the High jump with a 2.22m (7’3-1/4”), and Tamara Myers
in the Triple Jump with a 12.85m (42’2”) performance.
Bronze medals were captured by Latario
Collie-Minns in the Triple Jump with a 15.93m (52’3-1/4”) performance,
The women’s 4x400m relay with Anthonique Strachan, Pedrya Seymour,
Devynne Charlton, and Katrina Seymour with a clocking of 3:42.61, and
the men’s 4x100m relay with Blake Bartlett, Shavez Hart, Delano Davis,
and Trevorano Mackey in a new National Junior record of 40.26sec.

Trevor Barry Wins Bronze Medal in
High Jump in Daegu

September
Trevor Barry set a personal best in
winning the Bronze medal in the IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South
Korea.
Barry, whose previous personal best
was 2.29m (7’6-1/4”) jumped 2.32m (7’7-1/4”). This was the ninth
consecutive championships that The Bahamas won a medal.
Debbie Ferguson-Mckenzie finished sixth
in the 200m in 22.85sec and Leevan Sands finished seventh in the Triple
Jump with a seasonal best of 17.21m (56’5-3/4”).

Triple Jumper Antonique Butler finished
in fifth place with a jump of 11.22m (36’8-1/2”).
Donald Thomas Wins Pan Am High Jump
Guadalajara, Mexico
23-30th October
In the final competition of the year,
former World Champion Donald Thomas won the High Jump with a seasonal
best of 2.32m (7’7-1/4”).
Ramon Miller won the Bronze medal in
the 400m in 45.01sec, his second best time ever.
National Records Broken
Athletes set National records in thirteen
different events this season. In the senior division five were set,
one of them in the men’s division, and two by a junior athlete.
Three records, two by juniors were
set on Bahamian soil.
The oldest record broken was the Women’s
Long Jump, first set by Shonel Ferguson in 1982 at 6.80m (22’4”)
and tied by Jackie Edwards in 1996.
Bianca Stuart jumped one centimeter
better with a 6.81m (22’4-1/4” ) in Mayaguez.
Ivanique Kemp from the University of
Arkansas set a new record of 13.20sec in the 100m hurdles at Eugene
Oregon on May 28th.
Hughnique Rolle set two records, the
1500m at 4:43.97 and 3000m at 10:27.32. Both were done at the Carifta
Games in Montego Bay. The 1500m was done on April 23rd and
the 3000m record on April 24th.
They are both National Junior records
also.
In the senior Men’s division Oneil
Williams ran 14:00.54 at the Fritz Grant Invitational for the 5000m.
In the Junior Girls Division, other
than the records set by Rolle, four new records were set.
Anthonique Strachan set a new record
in the 200m at 22.70sec at the Pan American Junior Championships. The
old record of 22.85sec was set by Sheniqua Ferguson.
Shaunae Miller broke her record set
in the IAAF World Junior Championships in Moncton twice. Her record
of 52.45sec was done in the semi-final in Moncton. Miller ran 51.85sec
at the BTC Jr. & Senior Nationals in Grand Bahama. Then she broke
that record by a hundredth of a second at the IAAF World Youth Championships
in Lille, France where she clocked 51.84sec.
Katrina Seymour found her niche this
year in the 400m hurdles when she broke the National junior record several
times. She ran her best of 57.24sec in winning a Bronze medal at the
Sr. CAC Championships in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.
Tamara Myers jumped 12.90m (42’4”)
at the BTC Jr. & Sr. National Championships in Grand Bahama for
a new National Jr. record in the Junior Girls Triple Jump.
In the Junior Boys division Ryan Ingraham
established a new National Junior record in the High Jump with a leap
of 2.23m (7’3-3/4”).
The Junior Boys 4x100m relay record
was broken twice.
At the Carifta Games Chavez hart, Trevorano
Mackey, Laron Hield, and Stephen Newbold ran 40.29sec for a new record.
In Miramar, Florida, Blake Bartlett,
Chavez hart, Delano Davis, and Trevorano Mackey ran 40.26sec, improving
the record by three hundredth of a second.
We all anticipate numerous national
records to be broken in 2012 on the way to and during the IAAF World
Junior Championships in Barcelona, and the Olympic Games in London.
