BAFF to host IFAF Flag Football World Championship in Grand Bahama

Freeport, Grand Bahama Island, Bahamas - At a press conference at Grand Lucayan Resort March 17, 2016 The Bahamas American Football Federation (BAFF), a member of the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) announced that they will be hosting the IFAF 2016 Flag Football World Championship (FFWC) in Grand Bahama, The Bahamas during September 7-12, 2016.

The IFAF Flag Football World Championship has been held since 2002 and is the showpiece bi-annual tournament for senior national teams competition in 5-on-5 flag football and has separate competitions for both the men and the women.  2016 will mark the 8th World Championship.

With the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism – Sports Tourism serving as the lead sponsor for the IFAF 2016 FFWC, The Bahamas American Football Federation is staging a world class experience for between 17-19 IFAF member countries to come to Grand Bahama to compete for the IFAF Flag Football World Cup.

Competing countries include:  Austria, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britian, Guatemala, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Kuwait, Mexico, New Zealand, Panama, and the USA.  The two (2) additional countries attending could be Brazil and Honduras if they win the medal rounds of the Americas qualifying tournament.  There are a total of twenty-eight (28) teams participating with a contingent of up to 20 persons per team.  That will mean a total of 560 athletes and coaches competing during the five (5) day world championship.

Team Bahamas will also be competing in both the Men’s and Women’s divisions.  Team Bahamas will be lead by National Team Admiinistrator Mel Ferguson, current Commissioner for the Bahamas Flag Football League in New Providence.
The FFWC Local Organizing Committee Administrative Team has been formed and is led by the BAFF President, LaLisa Anthony with Co-Chairpersons Nuvolari Chootinsingh (Ministry of Tourism – Sports Toursim) and Melissa Forbes (Ministry for Grand Bahama).  Additional members of the LOC Administrative Team include:  Dr. Kelley Duncanson, Finance Director. David Adderley, Operations and Logistics Director, Tammi Mitchell, Events & Hospitality Services Director, Ricardo Lightbourn, Media/Marketing Director, Gladstone McPhee, Stadium Operations Director, Stanford Duhaney, Team Operations Director, Fred Sturrup, Dr. Freeman Lockhard, Medical Director, FFWC Consultant, and Celestine Adderley, Recording Secretary.

The LOC has also engaged the services of multiple entities throughout Grand Bahama focusing on the operations and logistics of the event in order to ensure its success.  This group includes:  Bahamas Foreign Affairs, Bahamas Immigration, Bahamas Customs, Ministry of Education, Royal Bahamas Police Force, Royal Bahamas Defence Force, City of Freeport Council, Road Traffic Division, Grand Bahama Power, Grand Bahama Health Services, and the Junakanoo Committee.
