The Bahamas Baseball Federation (BBF) recently
released the names of the young men who will represent The Bahamas at
the 2009 Latin American
PONY Caribbean Zone Baseball Tournament in Gurabo, Puerto Rico.
The tournament, which is hosted by PONY Baseball Inc., will cater to
young men from 15-16 years old. Team Bahamas, which placed third at
last year's championships, departs New Providence on Monday, July 6 at
9:00 p.m. on American Eagle, for the tournament which will run through
Sunday, July 12. The participating countries are Aruba, The Bahamas,
Curacao, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.
Named to represent The Bahamas are: Alvin Rolle (Pitcher/Utility
Player - Bimini Baseball League); Jeffery Woodside (Pitcher/Outfielder
- JBLN); D'Andre Rigby (Pitcher/Outfielder - JBLN); Ramon Grant (Middle
Infielder - Grand Bahama Legacy League); Marcus Holbert
(Pitcher/Infielder - Grand Bahama Legacy League); Marvin McQueen
(Infielder - Grand Bahama Legacy League); Cameron Richardson (Infielder
- Grand Bahama Legacy League); Byron Ferguson (Pitcher/Outfielder -
JBLN); Crachad Laing (Pitcher/Catcher/First Base - JBLN); Chad Burrows
(Infielder - JBLN); David Sweeting (Pitcher/Outfielder - JBLN);
Theodore Sweeting Jr. (Catcher/Pitcher/Third Base - JBLN); Alex Tapia
(Infielder - JBLN); Ashton Allens (Infielder/Pitcher - JBLN); Jervis
'Champ' Stuart (Outfielder/Pitcher - Grand Bahama Legacy League); and
Andre Turnquest (Outfielder - Grand Bahama Legacy League). The coaches
are: Loren Kemp (JBLN) and Marcian Curry (Grand Bahama Legacy League).
The Team Manager is Patrick Knowles Sr. (Grand Bahama Legacy League).
Rigby, Ferguson, Laing, and David Sweeting were all members of the
third place team last year, while Tapia and Allens were members of the
13-14 national team last year. Allens is headed to Trinity
High School in the United States in the Fall semester while Theodore
Sweeting Jr., who was the Most Valuable Player of the 13-15 division in
the 2009 BBF National Championships and also the Charles Johnson 'Most
Outstanding Catcher', is headed to Christ School in Arden, North
Carolina in the Fall. Jervis 'Champ' Stuart currently attends Christ
School where he was a 2009 All-Conference selection. Outfielder Andre
Turnquest was an All-Conference selection at Ruban Gap High School in
Ruban Gap, Georgia.
The team is expected to be led on the field Stuart and Turnquest,
and in the pitching department by David Sweeting, who had an
outstanding pitching performance at the 2008 tournament, Marcus
Holbert, who is tremendous young standout in the Grand Bahama senior
league, and both Rigby and Ferguson.
Theodore Sweeting Jr. and Laing are expected to handle the catching
duties, and Tapia and Allens, who both had outstanding seasons in their
respective local leagues, are expected to lead by example in the
infield. Both players also have international exposure, having played
on the 13-14 national team last year.
