Associated Press - The Bahamas has been granted exempt status from the NCAA, clearing
the way for a new tournament that organizers hope will become the East
Coast version of the Maui Invitational.
The NCAA's Division I
Board of Directors approved the Bahamas over the weekend without
discussion, meaning the proposal will go into effect on Aug. 1.
Under
NCAA rules, a country must have exempt status to host a tournament or
the teams playing there will be limited to 27 regular-season games
instead of 30.
The Battle at Atlantis held a doubleheader inside a
converted ballroom in December, with hopes of becoming an eight-team
tournament next season.
The Bahamas joins Mexico and Canada as countries with exempt status.
