Nassau, The Bahamas - Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources the Hon. V. Alfred Gray praised the recent ‘Best of the Best’ Regatta as “more than a Regatta, it was the greatest socio-cultural and economic event in recent times.”

In a press conference at the Ministry, December 7, 2016 the Minister said the regatta was now history but that it brought together the best Bahamian sloops and sailors and also the Best of the Best in the international sailing arena, the Star Sailors League.

One hundred and fifty local sailors from New Providence, Andros, Long Island, Exuma and Ragged Island, and some 50 world class and Olympic sailors from 24 countries around the world – from four continents --participated in the tourney, December 1-4 at Montagu Bay.

Fort Montagu, he said, was converted into a sailing cultural village.

Never before had Bahamian sloop sailing and Olympic style sailing taken place simultaneously. It was viewed via internet around the world.

“Shock and Awe” moment, he said, was the firing of the 275-year-old cannons mounted atop Fort Montagu marking the start and finish of the races for each class.

There was nightly entertainment with a lineup that included Ronnie Butler, Androsia fashion show, delectable Bahamian dishes, and altogether a seamless coordinated effort that made the four-day event run “like a well-oiled machine,” said the Minister.

Minister Gray thanked all who made the event a success.
