Nassau, Bahamas - The triumphant Commonwealth Bank Giants are praising the support of the team’s longtime sponsor after pulling off one of the most incredible championship victories in the history of the New Providence Basketball Association.

Coach Perry Thompson said he could not be more proud of his team after they overcame a three game to one deficit to beat the Mailboat Cybots for the championship title, despite struggling with a number of key injuries.

“We have won many championships in the past, but this was the sweetest,” said Thompson, who is team coach and a senior manager at the nation’s top performing bank. “It was a major achievement. I think it was a first in the history of basketball in The Bahamas. For a while there it wasn’t looking good. But we sat down and took a good look at what we were doing right and what we were doing wrong, and in the end we found the right formula. We trusted each other more and worked as a unit - that was the turning point.”

According to Thompson, it was not just the championship series that was challenging, but the entire season leading up to it.

“Early on, we had a number of injuries to key players, some of them season ending, so that was very taxing on us, especially for our captain and leading scorer, Michael “Furly” Bain, who was injured in the second round and could not make it back.

“That is why we dedicated the rest of the season and the championship in his honor.”

Coach Thompson added that none of the success enjoyed by the Giants over the years would have been possible without the unwavering support of their main sponsor.

“We are eternally grateful to Commonwealth Bank, which has supported us for over some 25 years,” he said. “I know of no longer sponsorship in basketball; it may actually be the longest relationship of its kind in all Bahamian sports.

“They are always there for us, whenever there is a need for the team. We couldn’t have made it without that support.”

Commonwealth Bank president Ian Jennings congratulated the team and expressed his pride in their achievement.

“This championship win was a testament to the power of teamwork and its ability to overcome the most difficult of odds. We at Commonwealth could not be more proud of the CB Giants and will continue to support this great team as it pursues even more success in the future,” Jennings said.
