Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources the Hon. V. Alfred Gray in a press conference on Wednesday announced the upcoming Diamond Jubilee Anniversary of the Cat Island Regatta July 29 to August 1, 2016 in New Bight Cat Island, and that Co-Founder of the Cat Island Regatta Godfrey Kelly would be honoured.

Speaking at the Ministry’s offices, Minister Gray stated: “For 60 years this Regatta has been a ‘must have event’ for Cat Island.  On this grand occasion the Sailing Club has chosen to honour Godfrey Kelly, who as an avid sailor co-founded the Cat Island Regatta 60 years ago.

“Having once served as a Member of Parliament for Cat Island, Mr. Kelly is recognized for his contribution to the development of the sport of sloop sailing, the continuity of this Bahamian tradition, and the preservation of this unique characterization of our culture.  For these reasons, on behalf of the Bahamian people, I wish to convey my sincere gratitude to the Cat Island Sailing Club for choosing to honour Mr. Godfrey Kelly, a lawyer by profession, an accomplished sailor, a noble Bahamian.”

Minister Gray said as the Cat Island Regatta is one of the oldest in the country, he encouraged all Bahamians to support the event generously this year, as it promises to be a grand event.

This year’s regatta will feature A, B, and C class sailing sloops and some of the best entertainers in the country.
