Four beaming faces – and rightly so. Each showing off the personalised soccer
cleats they won at this year’s Grand Bahama soccer camp to help make them stand
out in the new season.
Maeve McCrea, Daniel Brown, Frank Saldano and Nick Lane were
the four youngsters who in the view of the visiting coaches most took the eye
at the Sir Jack Hayward Camp. The high
quality cleats monogrammed with their names were the top of a host of prizes
awarded to kids who took part in the event.
The three pro coaches from the UK selected them from among
scores of worthy campers for their all-round contribution to the event which
has become an island sporting institution in its 11-year life.
It was held at the playing fields of the Freeport Rugby and
Football Club and it was fitting that the four received their prizes at the
club’s recent highly-successful 50th birthday celebrations. They are pictured with the club’s boys’
soccer head coach Mark Hardy (rear left) and the club president Rob Speller.
Speller said, “There were a lot of very talented kids at
this year’s camp. Maeve, Daniel, Frank
and Nick were worthy winners but there were a lot of other youngster who made
huge contributions to its success as well.
“The three professional coaches who flew over to lead the
fun and games told me they had a very difficult task singling out just four but
in the end they were worthy winners.
“The club has been very proud to host what we reckon is the
best youth summer sports camp all these years now. Youth soccer has become a
very vibrant part of the club’s activities in recent years and it was great
that the winners could receive their prizes in front of a good crowd at our big
celebration.”
Boys’ soccer under the leadership of Hardy takes place every
Saturday at 11.30am and is then followed at 2pm by girls’ soccer under head
coaches Mary Woodside and Donnie Knowles.
