of the Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) participated recently in the
Bahamas Marathon Sunshine Insurance 2012: Susan G. Komen Bahamas Race
for the Cure Weekend which took place on January 15, in Nassau, Bahamas.
Marathon
Bahamas is a non-profit organization, formed in 2009 to organize and
execute the official marathon in The Bahamas and related activities.
Since its formation, the event has attracted thousands of local and
international runners, and is fast becoming one of the popular marathons
worldwide with proceeds from the weekend benefiting national
organizations such as The Cancer Society of The Bahamas, The Princess
Margaret Hospital Foundation, Sister Sister Breast Cancer Support Group
and The Bahamas Breast Cancer Initiative.
The
team of 12 GBPA runners which included 3 relay groups was led by Henry
St. George. “This was not only a good way to promote fitness and a sense
of team spirit among our employees”, he said “but we also wanted to
show support for one of our former employees Willie Moss who is a cancer
survivor and has been very involved in the Susan G. Komen foundation.”
The
company, through a financial donation also pledged its commitment and
support of the fight against cancer and saw the team’s participation as
the best way to support those persons in the midst of the fight and get
involved on a more personal level.
For
two months the team comprised of Henry St. George, Andrew Brown, Shanta
Stuart, Cosetta Hall, Steffano Bevans, Sandra Bain Borowski, Sharel
Carter, Charisse Brown, Max Williams, Gwenique Musgrove, Kimberley
Miller and Charles Pratt; submitted themselves for grueling workouts and
training exercises to prepare for the race.
The
months of training certainly paid off with each relay team completing
the marathon course in under five hours. “They are all to be
congratulated,” said Henry St, George. “They did a fantastic job and the
experience was definitely worth it.”
