Freeport, Grand Bahama - The community of Grand Bahama and indeed the country has lost a legend in sports administration this past week in that of Mr. Calvin Cooper. Calvin Cooper was inducted into the Grand Bahama Sports Hall of Fame in 2013 for his many accomplishments and legendary contributions to Golf administration. In 1974 he was elected President of the Bahamas Golf Association (later became the Bahamas Golf Federation) a position he held for five years. Under his administration the association was expanded through the formation of two golfing divisions, the Northern Golf Association, consisting of Grand Bahama and Abaco and the Southern Golf Association consisting of New Providence. In 1975 he was appointed Manager of the Bahamas Golf teams where he served that post for fourteen years. During his leadership the Bahamas Golf teams competed in many international cups and competitions including the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships. It was here on Grand Bahama where he impacted the administration of golf the most. He was elected President of the Bahamia Country Club Members Golf Association in 1996 and continuously served for over fifteen years. Under his presidency the association had organized numerous tournaments where they raised funds for local charities here on Grand Bahama. Mr. Cooper was an Icon fixture on Grand Bahama and I recall his involvement and his assistance during my tenure in Local Government where he was instrumental in seeing to it that I accomplish a campaign promise of erecting a community park in Queens Cove, a community development properties he managed for First Atlantic Realty. We are saddened by this lost and as Chairman of the GB Sports Hall of Fame and on behalf of the committee members I would like to express our condolence to his family and indeed the golfing body in the country.
