Freeport, Grand Bahama Island - Players, parents and coaches will all receive a boost this weekend when the Freeport Rugby Football Club expands its successful soccer programme to offer for the first time a BOYS YOUTH SOCCER LEAGUE.

The Youth Programme  has run for over thirteen years on the island  and,  as well as helping promote the game,  has helped countless  boys  obtain overseas college scholarships, receive  national recognition and even play professional soccer in Europe!

As the Club begins to celebrate its 50th anniversary this season, the   organizers have decided to  re-boot the objectives of their soccer programme with the aim of re-energizing the  grass roots boys’ soccer on the island. Coach Mark Hardy noted that previously the programme had focused on   developing the skills of players already playing in local organized leagues.  However in recent years it has been noted that the level of players, enthusiasm and   skill level of the local grassroots boys leagues has reduced year on year. Accordingly, the Programme has decided to set up its own league to address the problem.

To this end, the programme is to commence new Boys leagues which will run every Saturday from 11.30 to 1pm at Freeport Rugby Football Club commencing September 19th. Boys aged 7 to 14 are invited to sign up and enjoy the fun and action.

Coach Mark, who has been instrumental in coaching boy’s soccer since the inception of the programme and has over 40 years of playing and coaching experience, further added that the new league will be

  • Organized and structured –  run in a professional   atmosphere which is the hallmark of the programme
  • Competitive  but  fun – with equal emphasis on both
  • Offering  additional first class coaching
  • Promote sportsmanship, respect, and sensitivity to the other players, coaches, parents, and referees
  • Enhance player self-esteem, confidence, emotional development and overall character
  • Provide equal access to the highest quality and most appropriate of programs of development for all boys
Coach Mark was keen to emphasize that the Academy programmes where higher level players at each age group   then obtain further coaching   and travel opportunities will begin   in November once the new soccer league is fully established.

The leagues will be split into 3 divisions for boys aged 7 to 14.

Each division will be based upon ability and size, with boys evenly split into teams to ensure good competitive games.

Interested players can sign up at Freeport Rugby Club from 10 to 11.30am starting Saturday. Entrance/club membership  fee is $25. Further details can be found on Facebook: Grand Bahama Boys’ Soccer or via email from markhardy242@yahoo.com
