Freeport, Bahamas - The Grand Bahama Sailing Club is celebrating its 10th year anniversary and has decided to commemorate this milestone on May 28th 2016 with the Sloppy Sloop Regatta. The Regatta is a boat race consisting entirely with homemade rafts designed with recyclable materials.  Teams will have an opportunity to scull, paddle, row or sail their "sloops" through a ¼ mile course at the GB Sailing club, to be eligible to win the most coveted prizes such as the Diving Conch Trophy, the Ting 'em Trophy and the Conchy Joe Trophy, along with other awards and prizes.

The Regatta is a full day event, filled with exciting  pool games, water sports and endless activities; starting the day at 1pm and 'sailing' through the afternoon. The new Director of the club, Ross Darmody, is pleased to be able to kick start the summer with the regatta and is extremely optimistic about bringing new faces to the club. "The idea is to have a fun, simple, silly boat race and a whole day of entertainment for families. We at the club thought this would be a perfect way to get more members of the community involved." said Darmody, who urges the local public to participate.

Darmody is a well-renowned sailor, having competed in competitions worldwide such as Laser & J24 World Championships. His passion for sailing and his love for Grand Bahama make him a great addition to the Club and he has managed to make multiple repairs and improvements to the club in the short time he's been here.

The Grand Bahama Sailing Club has been creating more and more opportunities for the youth and the community of Grand Bahama to enjoy their national past-time and have also been very busy competing with young Grand Bahamians in Regattas around the country such as the Junior Olympic Regatta and Laser & Optimist National Championships.

"The more kids we can find, the better" quoted Sarah Rolle, Club Secretary at the GBSC. "We are committed to getting these kids in the club and teaching them important life lessons like teamwork, discipline and work ethic; while providing a safe and fun environment for them and their families to enjoy the sport"

The Sloppy Sloop Regatta will be closely followed by the Grand Bahama Sailing Club's Annual Summer Adventure Camp. Each camp is 2 weeks long and is open to children with the ability to swim and love being in the water. From complete beginner courses to advanced sailboat racers, the GB Sailing Club have invested in the best instructors possible to ensure everyone has a fun filled summer. Darmody is urging members of the public to get involved.  "We can never have too many sponsors and we can never have too many kids", said Darmody. "The club runs off generous donations from the community and private sectors. We need more sponsors so that we can create more opportunities for kids who may not be able to afford the opportunity."

The Summer Sailing Adventure Camp begins June 20th and goes throughout the entire summer. For more information contact Sailing Director Ross Darmody at 727 SAIL (7245) or at rossgbsc@gmail.com. Or check out the club website www.grandbahamasailingclub.org
