Freeport, Grand Bahama - The organisers of the 30th Conchman Triathlon have had a huge boost with the news that a major sponsor has stepped forward to support the historic event.

The Grand Bahama Port Authority has recognised its major significance not just at home but abroad by becoming the first event sponsor since what has become the island’s sporting icon was launched in 1986.

That sponsorship milestone is matched by progress on the athletic side with a number of US athletes already signing up for the test of swimming, cycling and running almost two months ahead of the event on November 5. That captures the international character of the event since its early days with competitors flying in not just from North America but also from Europe.

Conchman chairman Christopher Baker and his organizing committee were determined from the start to ensure that this year’s triathlon would be groundbreaking not just to mark a major anniversary but also to celebrate the fact it falls on Guy Fawkes Day, with fireworks on the beach to match. The sport and entertainment will last all day and well into the evening at Taino Beach which has become the traditional starting point with an ocean swim and finish point with a run.

Baker said, “We are absolutely delighted that the GBPA has recognised the importance of this event by becoming the first really major sponsor. This is something which touches so many people on the island, and worldwide, and we are proud to have their support.” From here on it will be known as the GBPA Conchman Triathlon.

The chairman of the GBPA Sarah St. George said, “It was the right time for us to take this event on. We have always been strong supporters.”

There are a number of major innovations which will make this year’s running of the event particularly outstanding. For the first time competitors will be able to battle it out over longer Olympic distances. Swim – 1.5km, Bike 40km, Run – 10km. There will also be separate challenges for the best high school teams on the island and also to companies to field teams to win corporate honours.

Entries are open for all parts of the event and a number of companies and schools have already signed up. Those who want to join in should visit the Conchman website at www.conchmantriathlon.com

Baker continued, “This is a major sports event not just for Grand Bahama but also further afield. The Conchman triathlon has an impeccable athletic reputation. This year we want to take it to the community and provide a day of fun and entertainment for all the family.”
