Great Bahamian Tradition of Sculling Excites the Crowd at National Family Island Regatta - Over the weekend, the beautiful Exuma Harbour set the scene for the Sands ‘Man in the Boat’ sculling races at the 62nd National Family Island Regatta in George Town, Exuma. The sculling races were the talk of the crowd during the regatta weekend, and provided a great deal of truly Bahamian excitement. The sculling races began at 5:40pm on Saturday afternoon and after five sculling heats, Randolph ‘Reds’ McKenzie, an Exumian from Barraterre, was declared the winner, beating out Josh Green and Clay Moxey former sculling winners from Mangrove Cay, Andros and Danny Knowles former sculling winner from Salt Pond, Long Island. Exuma, Bahamas – Over the weekend, the beautiful Exuma Harbour set the scene for the Sands ‘Man in the Boat’ sculling races at the 62nd National Family Island Regatta in George Town, Exuma. The sculling races were the talk of the crowd during the regatta weekend and provided a great deal of truly Bahamian excitement.
“All day the regatta fans carried on conversations on who they thought would be the Sands ‘Man in the Boat’ sculling winner for the National Family Island Regatta,” said Lynden Johnson, Bahamian Brewery’s Sales Manager. “In fact, Exuma residents were reminded that, two years in a row, someone from Andros won the sculling race in George Town, encouraging Exuma residents to register to scull the boat.”

The sculling races began after five in the afternoon on Saturday with five sets of sculling heats. The sixth and final race of the day would declare the winner, which had local favourite Randolph ‘Reds’ Mckenzie and two former winners from Andros and one Long Island newcomer vying for the win.
All racers went out strong but when Reds McKenzie, from the settlement of Barraterre, reached the buoy first and turned towards the finish line – the crowds went wild! Randolph ‘Reds’ McKenzie was declared the winner, beating out Josh Green and Clay Moxey, former sculling winners from Mangrove Cay, Andros and Danny Knowles former sculling winner from Salt Pond, Long Island. Scullers Josh Green and Danny Knowles placed second and third respectively, also winning a Sands ‘Man in the Boat’ sculling trophy and truly Bahamian Sands beer.

“The Sands ‘Man in The Boat’ sculling race, has become a favourite event for regatta lovers; in fact, more and more Family Island Regattas and Homecomings are requesting the sculling race take place there,” noted Johnson. “We are extremely pleased with the amount of persons that registered and showed an interest in the Bahamian tradition of sculling in Exuma.”
The next stop for the Sands ‘Man in the Boat’ sculling race will be at the Long Island Regatta June 3rd – 6th, in beautiful Salt Pond, Long Island. More importantly, the winners from the individual sculling races will travel to Nassau this November to participate in the Sands ‘Man in the Boat’ Sculling Championship of The Bahamas which will be held at Montagu Beach.
