WNBA Connecticut Suns' superstar, Jonquel Jones was welcomed home like a hero on Saturday, July 23rd to the city of Freeport in Grand Bahama. Jones is the third Bahamian woman to earn a D-I hoops scholarship in the U.S. and plays for the Connecticut Sun. “Y’all did a great job. Just walking into the airport today I didn’t even know how to react because it was just so much. I really appreciated. Just seeing everybody dancing, singing, all my family in one place like that, my friends; I just want to say thank you to everybody that’s here today because it’s definitely a special occasion. It’s something I’ll remember for the rest of my life,” Jones told The Freeport News. The red carpet arrival was sponsored by Grand Bahama Power Company, Hoytes Sports, and the Freeport News. She was greeted by adoring fans, friends, family and Hoytes youth basketball teams along with Coach Gladstone ‘Moon’ McPhee. Then a motorcade took place from Freeport to Holmes Rock Community Park, in West Grand Bahama, where Jonquel grew up. There she thanked her parents, Preston and Ettamae Jones, and Coach McPhee. “I used to always be out here (Holmes Rock basketball court) creating scenario and acting like Kobe or Lisa Leslie, but little did I know I would be coming home from a league where all of the greats have played,” she told The Tribune. “It’s the highest level, but it’s a level that requires a lot from me so I will continue to work hard to ensure that I am on my game at all things and hopefully get better so that I can be one of the best that ever played in it.” On Sunday, Jonquel returned to the airport to help greet, Buddy Hield, as a week of celebrations were planned for both basketballs stars.
