All-Round Athlete! Jonquel Jones stands with her 'soccer' coaches, Mary and Donnie Knowles for a photo opp during her visit home to play with her team Riverdale Baptist from Maryland in the Geneva Rutherford High School Basketball Tournament underway in Grand Bahama. Her soccer coaches say, "Jonquel was a starter on our women's soccer team at the age of 12 and she played on the national U 17 soccer team at 15. She is one athlete who remains humble and is never satisfied with the level she is at- always working to do better both in academics and on the court. She is a joy to be around and she never forgets to thank the people who may have helped her along the way no matter how insignificant it may be in the broad picture. She is a fantastic role model for all the girls in Grand Bahama."

Freeport, Bahamas - 2012 Geneva Rutherford Girls Basketball
Tournament, hosted by HOYTES is underway in Grand Bahama after starting on Wednesday, February 15th at the St. Georges Gymnasium. 6 of the country's top teams are competing including the Queen's College who are ranked number one, along with visiting U.S. teams. Local teams are CR Walker, Jack Hayward, St. Johns, C.I. Gibson and Tabernacle Baptist Academy.
"We use HOYTES as a pilot
program to ensure that we continue to promote senior girls basketball at
the highest level on a national level and we are using this tournament
to make this happen," said Neville Wisdom to the Freeport News.
"We are looking to Grand Bahamas as the city to host the national
tournament every year, including volleyball and girls' and boys' soccer.
"We believe that academics go hand in hand with athletics."
"We are delighted to work along with the Ministry of Education and
the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, along with FOCOL and we will
continue to stress to the young ladies that you get from it what you put
into it. We are a dream to bring girls basketball up to the same level
of the boys, "said Director of HOYTES Gladstone "Moon" McPhee.
The feature attraction will be Jonquel Jones and the top ranked Riverdale Baptist Crusaders (24-1) out of Maryland.
"The country will have a chance to see 6' 3" Jonquel Jones and her
school the Riverdale Baptist, as they have given her the opportunity to
play her last game in high school for her country in an exhibition
game," said McPhee.
"We need to support our very own, show her how much The Bahamas loves her while she is here.
"Jonquel is a committed young lady and I remembered working out with
her every 5:00 a.m. and whenever we called practice at five, her father
made sure she was there by 4:30 a.m.; he stuck with her and he must be
given credit because now she has no school fees to pay and I know she
will make them proud."
