Junior tennis players in Nassau from around the world

The Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association is hosting its 16th edition of Junkanoo Bowl ITF Tournament which begins today and runs through Saturday, July 8, 2017. Qualifying Round will be held for two days and the Main Draw (32-Draw) begins Monday, July 3 and runs through Saturday, July 8. Matches start at 9:00 a.m. daily at the National Tennis Centre, Q. E. Sports Centre.

This Tournament will showcase junior players ranging from ages 13 – 18 from all around the world such as: the United States, El Salvador, Barbados, Canada, Japan, Belize, Mexico, Russia, Bolivia, Venezuela, Guatemala, Bolivia, Australia, Argentine, Turkey and Islamic Republic of Iran - all converging to compete, as each player battles for the title. Some 150 participants are scheduled to be a part of this spectacular event. Also participating in the Junkanoo Bowl are some of our top junior athletes from Grand Bahama and New Providence who have been preparing for this international event for

several months. Local players participating in the 18U event are: Iesha Shepherd, Donte Armbrister, Gabriela Donaldson, Sydney Clarke, Sierra Donaldson, Afrika Smith, Oneal Mortimer, Sydni Kerr, Trenton Smith, Kofi Bowe (all in the Main Draw) and Elana Mackey, Lauryn Daxon, Hannah-Joy Simms, Donesha Gibson, Abigail Simms and Nathan Thompson are participating in the Qualifying Round. Leading the 14 and under event is Emma Weech who is ranked 4th in the region and just came off a double-finalist position in Aruba both in her singles and doubles events. Some of the other top juniors participating in the 14u event are: Denali Nottage, Perjae Major, Gabrielle Simms, Kaylee Kanuka, Genesis Missick, Ryan Fox, Michael Major Jr., Anthony Burrows Jr., Dentry Mortimer Jr. and John-Thomas Laramore. ITF Supervisor is Mr. Mickey Williams, and Mr. George Baxter, Referee who has under his purview the 14 and under players. Mr. Ricardo Demeritte is Tournament Director.

The tennis community and the public at large are invited to come out and support our junior tennis athletes. The tournament is also a test run to the Commonwealth Youth Games (Tennis). The Games are being held July 18 – 23 with nine (9) sporting disciplines showcasing the talent of their top athletes – all events happening simultaneously.
